Is it officiate or officiant?

Dumb question but I always thought it was officiant but all the spell check programs want me to make it officiate.

Re: Is it officiate or officiant?

  • Officiant is the person.

    Officiate is the verb.

    An officiant officiates.

  • The officiant is the person. Officiate is the action that he or she does.  Officient = noun.  Officiate = verb.
  • So, I use officiant in the programs right? That's what I thought... you officiate something but you are an officiant. The spell check keeps telling me I'm wrong!

  • MS Word's spell check and grammar check is wrong a lot.

Yeah, it is wrong quite a bit but I was just confused considering my sister told me that the spell check was right and that I was wrong. Usually, I know when it's wrong but I never spell officiant or officiate... Made me second guess myself...

  • Spell check did the same thing to me when I typed our programs. I knew I was right, but it still made me momentarily doubt myself.
