Cashing checks?

I was just wondering if there is a certain amount of time you are supposed to wait before you cash checks you receive as gifts.  We went to a wedding over a month ago, and our check still hasn't been cashed.  Also, we went to a wedding in May and they didn't cash our check until August.  I don't know if I would feel comfortable holding on to that much money for so long! Thanks

We cashed ours right after we came back from the honeymoon, so no more than 2 weeks after the wedding. Just write 'For Deposit Only' on the back with one of your account #s, and you can deposit them before you change your name and get a joint account.

Should be ASAP but it sounds like they're waiting until her name is changed legally.  Ugh, that's annoying because some of us are really particular about our check registers.

We cashed ours when we came back from the HM. Some were made out to "Meredith and Oliver Hislastname." I had H endorse them, but was told he needed to come in person (we don't have a joint account, we were depositing them in my account). So we both went to the bank on a Saturday, 2 weeks after the wedding, and cashed them. I think it's polite to cash them ASAP.
