Tip for Caterer?

Our caterer waived the 18% gratuity that he normally requires because we put down a large deposit, but I feel like we should still tip him. 18% gratuity seems a bit high compared to the suggestions on the knot tipping sheet of $300 for the catering manager.

I was planning to follow the tipping suggestions on the knot and tip the caterer (he co-owns the company, if that makes a difference) $300 and then tip the bartenders/waiters $25 each. Does that sound fair or do I seem cheap for not matching the formerly required 18% gratuity?

Re: Tip for Caterer?

  • I'd tip the bartenders & waiters better than $25 each.  I wouldn't really do much for the co-owner, though.

  • Thanks. I did think that $25 seemed kind of low. Tipping is so arbitrary...
