Why don't I have a Pulitzer!?!

OK, so this is the stupidest thing in the world to be depressed about, but oh well.

I have a bachelors in journalism from a really well known school, but post-college I've done essentially nothing with it. That's partly due to circumstances, and honestly partly due to lack of that crazy drive that allows people to be really successful in a difficult labor market.

I have a good job now, and I don't even hate it, but I just found a girl that I graduated with in 2007 has won a Pulitzer. A freakin' Pulitzer!

Anyone else have any wildly successful classmates?

Re: Why don't I have a Pulitzer!?!

  • Oh yes, I totally understand. There are former classmates of mine that have gone on to become very successful fine artists with waitlists for their paintings and I have only finished 1 oil painting in the last 10 years. Loser, table for me.

  • I don't think any of my classmates are wildly successful... though one was a pro biker for a while, which I thought was kind of cool.

I've got some friends who are pretty successful.  I think one of them works in the White House.

And I know someone who went to the same school as Barack Obama, though not at the same time (I don't think).

  • That is pretty cool!

My college class was so large, I couldn't even begin to tell you how many successful classmates I have. But if I had to guess, there are probably quite a few.
  • Guys I knew in college developed the redlaser iphone app.  It was downloaded like 8 million times  And then they sold it to Ebay, for millions of dollars.

That's awesome! Hard to say which makes me more jealous: Career success or boatloads of money haha!

  • No one I went to high school with is incredibly famous yet, but my mom went to high school with Tom Hanks.  And didn't get him to sign her year book.  She's a total failure at going to high school with people who will become ridiculously famous.

  • I also have a Journalism degree.  But, luckily, none of my classmates are successful!  Woohoo!

Well, one is the main evening anchor on a local news station, but... it's the worst station.  lol

Ditto! One guy is a reporter for a channel in Kansas somewhere, but he gets like two stories a month. I don't consider that success.

I've had about 5 people I graduated HS go on reality shows...but the biggest was called "Big Man on Campus" that was shot on UCF - no one even remembers it, so it's nothing big lol. The others were like Blind Date
  • Oh!  Does anyone watch Stormchasers on Discovery?  Reed Timmer is the star, and I went to high school with his sister.  He was a few years older than us and already out in Oklahoma chasing tornados for most of the time I knew his sister, but we would always get really excited when we saw him on the Today show or something.
  • LDY, you are NOT old enough to have had friends on Blind Date.  No way.

    Hilarious!

I mean this girl got a Pulitzer but it was given for a story that she worked on with four other, more senior, reporters, so she's by no means a household name, but you figure that's gotta look pretty good on the ol' resume for the rest of your life!

I bet a few of our professors might well be jealous of her!
    Lizzie
  • Not on Blind Date - but they were similar shows - where they had someone new every week type of thing. Like Chopped on Food Network has new folks every week? Sorry - that was confusing lol. I don't even remember the name of the shows!
  • Ok, I was gonna say- I watched Blind Date when *I* was in HS, and I know I'm older than you.  ;)

Oh, one guy from my graduating class kept updating in the Alumni thing that he was working on Survivor, Amazing Race, blah blah... I never found his credits on anything ANYWHERE.  He is such a lying liar who lies.

I've known me one or two folks like that too! We had one friend who went back to her home city one summer to do a "prestigious" clerkship while in law school. About mid-summer through a mutual friend it came out that she was actually unemployed and living at home.

And I might've felt sorry for her too if she wasn't one of those girls whose main goal in life it was to make you feel like ass about yourself.
    Lizzie
  • Yeah, I've known some people like that too.  Like this guy that kept updating facebook that he was a finalist in some huge playwriting constest that didn't even exist.  Dude, people know how to google your lies.

  • Wow, a Pulitzer within 4 years of graduating is amazing (well, actually, ANY Pulitzer is an amazing accomplishment). I went to a huge college -- I wouldn't begin to know if anyone's done anything amazing.
  • I know tenofcups, it's a pretty extraordinary accomplishment for a 26-year-old woman!

Underneath my jealousy and bitter disappointment is an awful lot of pride not just in the girl, but in our school as well!

  • My middle school history teacher won The Price Is Right.

    That's about it.

Some are successful, just nothing too crazy.
(I may go check my FB later and say otherwise.)

  • ya i honestly have no idea.... i don't really keep in touch with anyone from HS and I really don't read the alumni newsletters for my undergrad/grad schools.

*tries to think*....uhmm ya no one super famous or successful that I know of.
  • 1 guy from my high school is in the NBA, and another is on the Packers and just won a Superbowl ring.  Both were a few years younger than me though.

  • One of my middle school classmates was on Blind Date.  One of my roommates in grad school was on Blind Date.  He actually hit it off with his date, and she stole some of my jewelry.  He moved out of the apartment after he stopped paying his bills and got kicked out of his masters program.  Sketchy stuff.

H's friends are generally more famous than mine.  He played high school and college football, so he has friends who were in the NFL.  I went to prep school, so I went to school with a bunch of ne'er-do-wells with famous parents.
  • A girl I was friends with in college now has a fashion blog about being chic on a budget - and I found it because CNN did an article on her!

Two guys I went to high school with are now playing major league baseball, one with the Twins, and one with the Brewers.

I really have only kept up with a couple of people I went to high school and college with so I don't know if anyone has been wildly successful yet. But I admit, I have looked people up on FB in the past (creeper alert) and some those that seemed to have no profile privacy settings seemed to be doing well.

It kind of made me feel slightly depressed when I saw what some of them are up to. I can't really complain, I have a decent job doing what I like, I'm getting married and things are ok generally. But when I see that some people moved to LA or Hawaii and are sort of "living the dream" it makes me feel like I haven't done much.

Then again, it's my own fault. And I generally like my life. So I put that behind me pretty quickly. It's really interesting to see how people have changed since I've "known" them. Either way, I understand what you mean, OP.

I looked at a school whose major claim to fame was that Mr. T's daughter went there. I did not go to that school. But I do have a degree in journalism. But I don't work in the field. Someone who was a music major at my school is now a very successful composer for porn movies. Also, Ricki Lake and David Boreanez went to my school. And Jessica Savitch for journalism nerds.

My H on the other hand was in college with Hank Paulson's daughter. Graduates of his school also apparently have the highest incomes of any college and it's also graduated 164 senators and representative and one vice president. Undecided And 8 pulitzer prize winners. And 3 Nobel prize winners.

Oh! One of my college friends was on Cash Cab!

Haha, my college boyfriend is a news anchor, but in Texas. I believe he's moved from Laredo to San Antonio. Which doesn't exactly make me jealous OR regret no longer being together.

Oh! And my SIL went to high school with the older sister of Mr. Boston from I Love New York and I Love Money.

AND one of my friends made out with him on her birthday and later called Loveline because she thought he gave her mouth herpes, and his twin brother heard it.
