Stupid dress question for the marrieds

My dress is heavy and hot and has lots of itchy tulle and is not particularly comfortable.  I realize I probably should have thought about this before I bought it, but I'm stuck with it now.

Lately I have been kind of panicky about this and I'm terrified I'm going to be uncomfortable and cranky on the wedding day.  Did any of you have a similar fear during fittings?  Was your dress a PITA and uncomfortable on the wedding day or were you so excited you forgot about it?  Was there anything you did that made it more bearable aside from binge drinking and/or crack?

Re: Stupid dress question for the marrieds

  • My dress was very lightweight and airy, so I didn't have this problem.  However, I would imagine you wouldn't notice it too much on your wedding day anyway.  It's a beautiful dress!
  • I truly did not notice anything that day. I was especially worried about any discomfort from my surgery in the tight dress. As you see from the pics, I was nothing but smiles. I know it is quite the experience wearing a wedding dress, but it is going to be a wonderful one if you just get in the moment and let the day roll :)

  • Interesting.  I never would have thought your dress fit any of those descriptors.

my dress was pretty light, even though it ws satin.  My crinoline was stiff and scratchy before the shop steamed it, afterwards, no problems.

What will you be wearing under the dress?

  • My dress was pretty heavy, and it had beading under the armpit area.  I was worried about being uncomfortable or the beading irritating my skin, but aside from stepping on the hem a few times, I didn't think twice about itching or the weight or anything.

You'll be fine and look amazing and love every minute of it! :)
  • Thanks.  I was definitely not thinking about the practical aspects of it when I bought it.

It's currently about a foot too long, so I'm hoping that once it's altered that will take some of the weight/unwieldiness out of it.

  • Mine was ridiculously heavy, but not itchy. Does the tulle touch your body anywhere? Can you line it with something so it's not itchy?

I honestly never remembered how heavy mine was on the Big Day. You'll be so excited it won't matter, I'll bet.

  • My dress was super tight and our reception was very hot, but honestly, I didn't even think about it until we got back to my parents' house after the reception and my H unzipped it. At that point, I thought "How did I not pass out today?"

But during the wedding, it didn't even cross my mind.
  • I was worried that a) I was going to freeze my butt off because it was pretty cold on our wedding day and b) that the lace edging was going to rub me raw on my chest/arms.  I was cold for about 5 minutes the whole day and didn't notice the lace until the end of the night.  The adrenaline takes a lot of those little discomforts away.

By the end of the day, no amount of adrenaline could rescue my feet though.
  • aMrs, it's deceptive.  It looks light, but it's really layered--some kind of sheer fabric over lace over a lining with tulle at the bottom.

Under the dress, I'm not sure what I'm going to do yet.  Spanx definitely, possibly a crinoline, boobs are still up for debate.

  • I was a little uncomfortable in the hour or so leading up to the ceremony...I was nervous, so I noticed every little thing that was getting on my nerves. But I didn't notice anything the rest of the day.

My biggest suggestion: get cups sewn in. Strapless bras and bustiers move around, but with cups, you'll forget they're there as soon as you're in the dress. IMO, they also keep the dress from sliding around as much.
  • Um, yeah, mine is heavy too. Having it on for 10 minutes makes my legs sweat, so I'm also nervous.

  • My dress was heavy and had lots of tulle as well.  During your fittings, it's not going to be pressed yet.  Once it's pressed, the tulle will lay much nicer and you won't notice it at all on the wedding day.  I did notice it was a little warm during the night, but I was out on the dance floor most of the night.  Otherwise, it was no problem at all.  I think you'll be fine, Brie.

  • I will second having cups sewn in.  The last thing I needed was to worry about a bra too.

Hemming the dress will definitely make a difference.

  • My dress was ridiculously heavy.  I bought a crinny that had hoops, does that make sense?  Under the dress, nothing actually touched my legs when I was standing up b/c of the hoops.  It helped a lot.  That and the adrenaline.
  • I love the idea of having cups sewn in, I just hope it will work with my dress.  I HATE strapless bras.

  • I was worried my dress would be hot because it was a little thick. The hoop kept it off me, though, and I avoided putting it on until JUST before the ceremony (eg. when the boys arrived I put it on (I was already there but inside, the wedding was outside). It was honestly fine, though. I was far too happy and excited to even notice if I was hot or cold, but I think it was fine all night. It wasn't itchy though, which helped.

And like aMrs, I'm surprised as your dress doesn't look itchy/heavy in the slightest!
