Help, I'm feeling awkward again...

Is there a wrong way to ask someone to be part of your wedding?

It's my FSIL because both my brother and sister have been asked (and are super excited) and I wanted to include her as well.  We're not super-close and FI and she don't talk often either.  Trying to not be super-awkward about it...

Re: Help, I'm feeling awkward again...

  • Why would you ask her if neither you or your FI is close to her?
  • She lives in a different state and we're not very talkie-talkie people.  When we get together for family things, we all have a decent relationship, we're just not best friends.
  • I'm not close to my SILs either.  DH isn't really either.  Plus we were OOT from each other. There is a 'family bond' of sorts that keeps them together. Dh wanted them, I couldn't think of a good reason not to have them, so I did..

I happen to be in town, so I asked them to be in the wedding.  It wasn't awkward for me. I just did it.

Because we were not close I didn't expect anything from them as far as helping.  I just expected them to show up in the dress. That's all the did.  NDB to me.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • I was this FSIL for my brother's wedding - TBH, it made me feel really good to be asked. I'd just call her up or text her or something and say "Hey, I know this is out of left field, but I've been thinking and it would really mean a lot if you were in the wedding." yada yada. If she says yes say "great! I'll call you about it later" and then do. Do NOT leave her wondering wtf is going on. Keep her up to date as much as your other BMs...or more since you'll probably talk to them naturally about it more. Don't let her feel like a third wheel.

    Just ask her!
  • Lynda and LDY have given you great advice.
