Not So Lady-Like

So my future Mother-in-law and sister-in-law are so gross. They burp so loud and gross all the time. I'm so embarassed to go anywhere with them. They do it at the table while we're eating, at home and in restaurants. And most of the time, they don't even say, "excuse me". My fiance's sister loves to lean over and fart whenever possible as well and she see's nothing wrong with it. She's 24 years old, single, so weird and has no friends. I honestly cannot stand the girl. I'm so appauled by them. I don't want them acting like this at our engagement party, rehersal dinner or wedding. What should I do? And these burps, they aren't suttle little things, they are in your face, not even tried to be held in, let them rip kind of burps. HELP PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow, that's something.  I don't think there's any way to say anything without making them feel inferior and child-like, and that's not a good way to start your life out as their daughter-in-law/SIL.  But definitely stay up-wind.

ETA--I just read the responses on your other post.  I like those better.  Be honest--I went this direction with my post because I would have a really hard time with this conversation, but it's definitely the better way to go.  They're right--if you're honest, and non-confrontational, that's the best way to go.

  • I am the type of person to say something but in a nice way, especially something like this. But whenever you talk to these people, it's like talking to a wall. They give you this blank stare and look at you like you're speaking a whole other language. I actually got my fiance so stop being so gross a couple of years ago. I broke his nasty habits because I told him it was gross and I guess he was embarassed or got tired of me getting on him about it. Either way, it worked. But his mom and sister are so different. No personalities, so not fun to talk to. I like the beano thing.... Thanks for the ideas.
  • Definitely have their table in another room.  They don't deserve to sit with all the normal guests.

Does it bother your FI as well? If so, I'd ask him to talk with them about it. I would hope that they would have the sense to restrain themselves from purposely doing either at your RD and wedding. And hey, if they think it's funny then they'll be making fools of themselves.

  • My FMIL will probably be talking to all the guests about aliens. She will not be burping or farting in people's faces. Maybe she can take the place of your FMIL and FSIL?

Seriously, this conversation should come from your FI. He has likely been dealing with this somewhat embarrassing behavior his whole life and hopefully if he asks them seriously they will "behave".

  • i feel for you because my FBIL is like that. He is so disgusting! When we bought our house we had him over for a nice dinner and he lifted his leg and farted at the table. This is a very common thing for him and he thinks it is funny. He is 20 so younger yes but even my child would NEVER do that.

I spoke to FI about it and he was on board with whatever I chose to do because he is embarassed by it. My FMIL and FFIL love me to death so when I bitched to them about it they were also on board with whatever I chose to do. I am normally not one to rock the boat but they are very aware that I will "handle" it. They respect me for my "not gonna tolerate BS attitude". They love it!

In December we went to look at Christmas lights and he wanted to tag along. He started farting in my backseat while sitting next to my son which PISSED me off! So I moved my son to the front seat, turned on the heater, rolled down his back windows and LOCKED them. I told him I refuse to smell his fecal matter and he can sit back there and waft it up for all I care. It was like 40 degrees plus the 65 mph windchill factor. He hasn't done it since and I got high fives from the fam.

  • Oh good lord. I can't even remember how it began (although I would bet money CEW started it) but there was a thread a few weeks ago where people were just saying off the wall things about their sex lives and this random poster was addressing all of our concerns. Mind you, these concerns included things like how to clean your ball gag, how to prevent chaffing from handcuffs, how to clean a battery operated vibrator etc etc.... I truly do NOT think this poster knew we were putting her on.I probably thought you were there because it would have been right up your alley!
  • Instead of a string quartet we had some of nick's friends just use their armpits to make fart noises to the tune of "here comes the bride" and I belched "I do".

Meg, it was picoult! I've seen her posting lately. And for the record, I was the one who asked about the ball gags, so you better recognize. ;)

And damn Katie, quick on the draw much? Not bad.
