Wedding Colors?

My fiance and I are looking to plan a carnival themed wedding/reception in April 21, 2012.  Several Questions I have in regards to this:

1.  Is this an okay theme to have around late April?
2.  We are looking at the following colors: Blue/Orange  - Is this an okay color combo for this theme and time of year?  If so, what shade of these colors would you recommend?  Are there any "splash" colors you might recommend at the reception, in flowers, etc.?

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!  Thank you for your time and look forward to hearing from you!

Re: Wedding Colors?

  • Isn't 'wedding' enough of a theme? I just can't understand a wedding needing a 'theme'. Color scheme, sure. Are you goign to have rides and cotton candy and clowns? I just can't imagine.

  • Make sure not to overdo the carnival theme. A little bit of theme goes a long way when it comes to weddings. You don't want your marriage to take on the feeling of a children's party. Subtle touches will do the trick.

As far as colors, if you're using a darker blue (navy, even) and orange, I think fuschia could be a nice pop of color, perhaps in the flowers.

  • I agree with PP's.  A little bit of theme goes a long way in a wedding.

  • Carnival? Love it! The blue and orange is great. Maybe "splash" some bright pinky-red in there too?

I agree with the PP about not letting the theme go too far. Have you ever seen the show "My Fair Wedding" (on WE?) A lot of the brides had beautiful themes but WAY overdid it.
I would definitely use the whole stripe scheme and bright colors. Maybe a cocktail hour with cotton candy and pocorn, or a cotton candy cocktail (I think those exist?). I would definitely say no clowns, or balloon animals. Then you're getting into birthday party territory (and I think that's the circusSmile).... but that's just me.

    Sound like BIG fun.

  • I like the idea of a theme, as long it's not overdone.  You can incorporate it into your invitations, font (for table numbers, place cards, etc.), and favors.

And orange and blue are complementary colours so I think it'll look nice and sharp.

  • I think it'll look great!  Just limit it.  Don't serve only carnival food, don't wear clown suits, don't decorate with only clown flowers, etc.

  • Here are a few things Google pulled up:

    To answer your actual questions:

    1. Not a fan of themes at all, but this one makes the most sense to have it during spring or summer.

    2. As you can see from the links I pulled, they usually use pretty bright colors: red and white, yellow, green, etc. If you want blue and orange, I'd stick with navy and bright orange, so that navy tones down the orange but keeps the fun in it.

    You could do this:

and just incorporate carnival themed aspects? Maybe ferris wheels for place cards instead of the compasses, a rock candy stick instead of a cinnamon stick on top of the napkins (and could double as favors!), and lots of candles and lanterns and strung lights.

  • Are you talking Carnival as in like a US carnival with clowns and stuff?

Or do you mean the Italian or Brazil Carnival? I like the idea of a Italian Carnival, with  gold, royal purple and teal. You could have the motif of masks running through things.

  • Hey Everyone,

Thanks for the insight.  When I stated carnival, meaning in colors.  You see a lot of orange, blue and candy apple red in carnivals but I wanted to make sure the colors worked in the spring.  Unfortunately, I am not great at color coordination.

We are doing a small wedding with maybe 40-50 people and then doing a huge reception for everyone to come.  In turn, we are wanting to have a section/area for kids to play at the reception.  Furthermore, we want to make the celebration extra special for those who are not at the wedding.  In turn, we wanted to come up with some creative ideas for fun things to do in addition to dancing, cake, etc.

Any suggestions to create the reception a focal point for those who will not be at the wedding?

    Thanks!
