Host Duties - Receiving line, etc.

"Bridal dances" are popular in our social circle (we've had several people ask to make sure we're doing one) where they take a shot and dance with the bride. No, they don't have to pay to dance with me.. but the shots are free (obviously) if they want one. This isn't a thread to debate that, but I have a semi-related question.

We are planning to do a receiving line after the ceremony as well as the bridal dance. During both of these we should have ample time to talk to the guests individually. We plan on still mingling with our guests during the reception, but are table visits an absolute priority if we are already doing the other two things? We are looking at just about 160 guests.

  • I think a receving line kind of gets you out of that obligation.  Just be sure if there was anyone that missed the ceremony to try and get a minute or 2 with them if you think of it!

  • I agree with hating table visits. Even when the Bride and Groom come to the table, it's only a few minutes and I find that you end up saying the same things as you would in a receiving line. They also usually are overwhelmed with all of the other tables to visit and rush off to the next table PLUS as PPs have pointed out, I'm usually trying to enjoy my meal!

We'll probably do a receiving line and make sure to mingle with everyone during the reception.
  • When my cousin Lindsey got married a few years ago, they had a split receiving line I guess.  My aunt and uncle, her DH's parents and the WP were all in the hall, but she and her husband went around to everyone after the recessional before anyone had gotten out of their pews.  That way they spent time with everyone, and there wasn't a mass exodus of people to get out.  It took awhile to reach the people in the back I guess, but it was kind of cool.  I'd never seen anything like that before.
