Engagement Announcement Advice

How should you word the engagement announcement (for the newspaper) when the bride is the daughter of her mother and deceased father, and the groom is the son of his mother, his late father, and his step-father who his mother married after his father passed away. His mother has his step-father's last name.

Ms. Jane Doe is the daughter of Mrs. Joan Doe and the late Mr. Jack Doe. Mr. Sean Young is the son of Mrs. Emma Jones and the late Mr. Chad Young. He is also the step-son of Mr. Frank Jones.

Is this right? I just made this up. Or should it be Mr. Sean Young is the son of Emma and Frank Jones of Atlanta, Georgia. He is also the son of the late Mr. Jack Doe.

Neither of these seem right to me.

You are the daughter of Mrs. John Smith and the late John Smith.  Your FI is the son of his mother & SFIL and the late your father's name
  • Thanks ootmother. I edited my first question to show what I was thinking:

So it's simply Mr. Sean Young is the son of Emma and Frank Jones of Atlanta, Georgia and the late Mr. Jack Doe of Niagara Falls, Ontario.

    That I do like.
  • Nope, typed that wrong. let me try again

    You worded the FILs correctly.

    Sorry, I can't type tonight

Daughter of the late Mr. Joseph Smith and Mrs. Smith. She is also the step daughter of xxx (new stepfather)
  • I've seen it done this way for announcements. You're likely paying per word, so this keeps it short, and people understand that Frank is the stepfather.

Jane Doe is the daughter of Mrs. Joan Doe and the late Mr. Jack Doe. Sean Young is the son of Mrs. Emma Jones (Frank Jones) and the late Mr. Chad Young.
  • You have to pay for wedding announcements?

Yes my local newspaper charges- and I just posted that it was $54.99 but I just realized that is for their nice print ads- a basic one is $16.50. (Just text.)

<div>Wow! That is a lot more than I was thinking it would be. We decided to skip it, but plan on doing a marriage announcement - I'll have to look into our newspaper's pricing.</div>
  • I just edited my post because I was wrong about the $54.99. It's under $17 for a basic text one (no photo.)
  • That's not so bad then :)
  • Do you have to write the announcement yourself?  My parents local newspaper just has a form that you fill out and they write it for you.
  • I would do:

Mrs./Ms.* Jane Martin of Charlestown is pleased to announce the engagement of her daugher, Miss Elizabeth Martin, to Mr. Thomas Smith of Newtown. The bride is a graduate of State University and works as a first grade teacher. She is also the daughter of the late Mr. Robert Martin.

The groom is originally from Anytown and is a graduate of University of State. He works as a mechanical engineer for Major Company. He is the son of Mrs. Susan and Mr. John Jones, and the late James Smith.

A Spring 2013 wedding is planned.

  • Yes we have to write the annoucement ourselves. Thank you for the advice on the wording. I'm not sure yet if we will do this in our big city paper (the Toronto Star) or in my hometown small newspaper. We might do that. The truth is, that we are doing this more of a keepsake for us and for our relatives/future generations who might enjoy this kind of thing than as an annoucement to anyone in particular.
