Did you DIY? When did you start?

I have a ton of projects I want to do, but I haven't actually started anything yet besides our STDs.

If you did DIY, what did you do and how much time did you give yourself? Did anybody help you, or were you in it by yourself?

Re: Did you DIY? When did you start?

  • STDs, Invites, centerpieces, candy buffet, cardbox (decorated birdcage), Guestbook (did a wishbowl) and programs.

Aside from the STDs and invites, I did the rest in the last few weeks by myself.

Most of the stuff I did myself... I really got into it at about the 6 month mark!

    Edit :

1 year out (after I bought the dress)
    - DIY bracelet
    - STDs
    - inserts for the invitations
    - Kid's coloring books
    - Sign for photo mat (signatures only please)
    - Memory candles
    - Coasters

    6 months
    - Invitations
    - Programs
    - Place cards (for the ones I knew were coming)
    - Stationery for mothers
    - BM earrings and necklace for MOH
    - Invite for RD
    - Wine charms for BMs
    - Wine stem charm for champagne glasses for H and I

Check out my bio for all my DIY fabulousness :)

  • I'm a few months out (september) and right now, I'm just in the planning phase. I'm doing full mock-ups to see how long it will take, how much paper I need, etc.

I'm making table cards, menu/place cards, the invitation ensemble and I guess that's it. My menu cards are going to be paper lanterns and I'm using my digital cutter to do it since I suck at using an exacto knife. One panel took about 10 minutes from start to finish. Once I finalized my guest list, book the venue and see the table set up, I'll know how many to do. But I figure a half hour per lantern isn't bad. :)

  • I did DIY invitations, an aisle runner, card box, escort cards, and programs.

I started the invites over a year out.  I knew what I wanted and I was able to do little pieces bit by bit rather than be stressed by the whole big project at once.  I'm glad I did because those suckers were a PITA.

  • Salty, I was looking at your bio and your DIY projects were freaking awesome. I could never do anything that great! I am about to start scrap booking though. I want to put together something about our trip to the UK. Hopefully it will go well and I can do a wedding scrap book too.

  • The only things we DIYed for my first wedding were programs and menus, which we did a few days before the wedding. I remember printing both out the night before I left to go to the ceremony city so I guess I was printing on Tuesday for a Saturday wedding. We couldn't do the programs till we wrote the ceremony, which we didn't do till the weekend before.

We did a lot more when DH and I got married, but we only had 11 guests so the volume of everything was a lot less. In the week before, we did menus which doubled as placecards and wrote the ceremony. The night before I made centerpieces (fresh flowers so couldn't do it any earlier) and bouquets.

We also made invitations and announcements, which took WEEKS. I was surprised at the amount of work and time involved in that.
  • Thanks Msmac!  I too love scrapbooking ;)

  • I made my veil, changed some vintage jewelry to suit me, did some of my own dress repairs, made an aisle runner, decorated a bird cage card box, did all the paper products for the reception (menus, table numbers, etc.), programs, and assembled favors.

I did the veil about 6 months out, the jewelry about 2 months out, and the rest in the weeks leading up to the wedding. It was busy, but worth it!
  • Oh, and I had a ton of help with the aisle runner, card box and favors. The rest I did alone.
  • I did:

table runners: 2 weeks out?  I dunno.  They could have been done faster, but I found it very annoying.

Painting frames: a month out?  But it took hardly any time at all.

I was going to do a card thing, and then forgot all about it, and we ended up getting nothing but cards. heh.
  • I DIYed pretty much everything but rentals and services, and I started over a year out and just did what I could, mostly by myself. It's important not to let things wait until too close to the wedding to accomplish. The things like card boxes, candy buffet materials, table cloths, decorations, etc. I could do and store. I waited until closer to finish the bouquets, invitations and programs. Things that need a guest quantity assigned can wait, but jump on the other things  you want to do so you don't get overwhelmed.
  • NOT RELATED, but I've been waiting until I've seen you on.

I finally looked at your final choice dress, and I love, love, love it on you. It's perfect.

  • I've DIYed a few things--such as cupcake toppers, our STD's, etc. Most of my DIYness has been revolving around gifts---to parents, FIL's, sisters, etc. And, I've been feeling crafty for a few weeks--my bookcase is just filled with DIY crap right now....so, 2 months out?

  • Yeah.  All the paper goods (in process), card box, cake stand, favors, some of the stuff in the OOT bags. . . there's a massive list in my bio.  I actually had done everything but some of the gluedot application on the STDs myself until last night.  One of my BMs came over for pizza & crafts.

  • H did our invites. They took forever but that was ok. H and I did our favours/placecards. They were pretty easy and turned out quite nicely. I did our centerpieces. I spent MONTHS collecting the old vases (and for that matter, the old port glasses used in the favours) from thrift stores, but putting the pianola roll together with those was pretty simple. I know there was more, but cannot recall what now! What are you thinking of DIYing?
