GUESTS+MOTHER IN LAW = disaster?

My soon to become mother-in-law is giving people on her list their own guests. How do you let her down easy and tell her we are keeping the numbers low?  I am trying to avoid giving guests out and having people we don't know, not come.  The idea of the wedding is to be intimate and small.

I suggest giving her an exact number she is allowed to invite, and be firm about it.

Just tell her that due to the budget she can invite X number of people. If she wants to give each person a +1 that's fine, as long as they equal the number. That way it won't be you saying "no that person can't come", just "here's how many people we can have"

But, with your own planning, keep in mind that guests in LTRs (married, engaged, living together, dating long term) are a social unit and must be invited with their significant others.
