Cake Etiquette

FI and I are doing our wedding on a tight budget and decided to go with sheet cakes and not have a traditional cake cutting.  Well this weekend my cousin mentioned that as part of our wedding gift she would like to make us a  smallish 3 tier cake (she is in pastry school and is wanting to enter the wedding cake industry). So now my question: is it OK to have a small tiered cake for FI and I to cut/eat and still do the sheet cakes for the rest of the guests?

Re: Cake Etiquette

  • Yes. A lot of people do this to save money.
  • That's what we're doing - it is saving us a LOT of money.  Actually, I don't know what the "cutting cake" will look like - our caterer just threw it in as kind of a bonus, so it may or may not be tiered.  But in the end - everyone gets a little square of cake, no matter how the cakes started out.
  • Yup...seen it done often and it works out well.  One the b&g do the cake cutting, it's whisked away, and guests are generally none the wiser.  If I wasn't being gifted a wedding cake, I would probably do something like that.
  • I've seen this done tons of time.  No one cares how the cakes looked before they're cut.  Great way to save cash!

    It's fine.

  • We did this, just had cupcakes instead of sheet cake. We allowed guests the option of eating the cake if they wanted it (since it was a different flavor thqn than the cupcakes). It was fine. No one cared, as long as they got cake in some form :)

  • A lot of people do it this way.  Some people do the tiered cake as a fake too - with just a little section of real cake for the cutting.
  • We're doing this too!  Saves a ton of money, on the cake AND at the reception site!  We're having a smaller two tier cake that will be cut and served last, but after we cut that cake, my personal attendant and other friends (who offered to help) will be serving the sheet cakes so we don't have to pay the cake serving fee.  They still provide us with plates, silverware, and napkins, but as long as they don't have to touch it - it doesn't cost us anything!  AND the sheet cakes are going to be pre-cut and have a "B" for our monogram in our clover green on each slice...I think I'm actually more excited about the sheet cakes than the other cake!

  • I would just check with your venue to make sure its ok, since some venues (like ours) don't allow cakes that aren't from licensed bakers. Otherwise, it's totally fine.
  • Yep, that is what we are doing. Our cake design is pretty labor intensive, so we are doing a smaller display cake with an additional sheet cake.

  • It's fine, but even if you just had sheet cakes, you could still do the cake cutting part where you slice into it together and feed each other the first bites.

  • Thanks ladies!  Our venue said it was fine so now I'm excited for the cake!
