NWR: Do I even want this job?

So here I am getting ready to apply for a Recruitment Consultant position at an employment agency.  As I'm doing my cover letter, it hits me.  Why don't they have anyone on their roster that they can fill the position with?

Is the company's roster that bad?

Is this even a position I want?

Employment agencies tend to have a lot of turnover. The position is probably open because someone didn't cut it. I think if it's a reputable agency, it's worth applying and at least seeing if you can get an interview. If you get face time with them, you can ask more questions about why the position is open and why they couldn't fill it internally. Maybe they're missing a skillset on their team that you could fill! I say go for it.

The issue may not be at all related to the fact that they don't have someone that they want to put into that position- but rather, that they want to appear to be fair in their recruitment- thus advertising to ensure that they can at least claim that they hired based on the most suitable candidate available rather than hiring based upon who they currently have/know. 

 

Certainly, all permanent government jobs here have to be advertised in order to be filled. It doesn't mean they don't have someone in mind for the position, but just that they want to ensure that they hire the most suitable candidate without bias.

I'm just getting discouraged knowing that I'm applying for jobs that I am way over qualified for (receptionist, admin assistant, etc).  The few jobs that I might be qualified for I'm always missing something in the requirements, such as two years in the tourism industry etc, or some specialized certification.

I'm ready to throw in the towel, because my current gig is not cutting it.  H and I don't even speak to each other on the days I have to work.

When did you start? Can you alter your hours at all?

 

and about the other jobs- the issue is getting a foot in... that, and, uhhh... creative answering of selection criteria! :P

I totally understand how discouraging it is. Hang in there! I think it's worth at least applying and giving it a shot. What's the worst that could happen?

Don't be put off because you don't have one of a few requirements. If you have done most of the things they're asking for, submit anyway.

Thesun, I started on the 12th.  My hours are open ended so I go in at 10, but can be kept until 9:30 pm if I'm needed. 

The hours aren't the reason we don't speak to each other.  It's because for at least 4 hours a day, while serving up fries, I have nothing to do but stew over how H's romanticised memory of OZ  got me to a point in life that I have to throw away a 20 year career and work at BK's (HJ's).  Trust me, by the time I get home, the geckos don't even dare test me.

The issue is, there's little employment where you are. It's a tourist town (I know you know this!). If you were in a capital city (hello Melbourne! I still maintain you would LOVE melbourne) it would be a different experience for you.

You guys have to compromise at some point... when will that be, and what will that be? Can you stop working and focus on volunteer work? If you did some volunteer work, it might help you get into a better job where you are, as it would update your skills (and would probably be closer to what you'd like to do long-term). 

 

I hope you can figure out a solution that makes you both happy.

I'm so sorry, aMrs. I can't even imagine what that must be like. I'm sure this goes without saying, but I hope you're talking to your H about how you're feeling.

Is there something you can do on your own that you would enjoy, from home? Freelance writing? Start up an Etsy site?

AK, H feels bad enough.  I'm going to counseling, but they can't change the realities.

Thesun,we can't afford to do anything.  Everything is at tourist prices.  We got to do the balloon ride because H works for the company.  That would typically have been a $695 morning.  Add in by the time H gets home, he sure doesn't want to drive 30 min back down the mountain to do anything.  It's not a good place unless you are a tourist or retired.

I understand that. I grew up on the Sunshine Coast. It's not far from Brisbane, but far enough that there was nothing to do. It's lovely to visit on holiday- absolutely gorgeous beaches and scenery- but to live in? So very boring, with a lack of job prospects that really limits your ability to live there (in the end, my parents moved us down to the Gold Coast in order to get permanent work. There was nothing available for either of them on the Sunshine Coast). I can imagine Cairns would be like the Sunshine Coast, but times 100 given the remoteness.

A-- in this market, it sounds like a great job so take it, B-- you can always quit if you don't like it, C-- they may be doing a restructuring that requires your fresh face!
