people who cook...

Does molasses go bad?  It's got a date on it, but really?

It's possible it could crystallize like honey or syrup.  How does it look?

  • I don't think so. Unless there is something growing on it its probably fine.
  • I don't think so. I think it's like honey, in that there's too much sugar for anything to live in it.

    But I'm not 100% sure.
  • It looks like molasses :)  Looks fine.  Nothing growing on it.
  • I'd say if you're within a year, you're probably fine.

  • November 2008.
  • I'll just put brown sugar in the chili then and toss the molasses...

  • Is it a use by date? Or a sell by date? I don't think it could go bad unless it is hard and crystalized. Did you try googling it?
  • I don't think it goes bad unles you leave it open or in bright light.
  • Honey is the only food that never goes bad. But... I don't know what the turnaround on molasses is.

    That's what she said.

    Sorry.

But really, if it doesn't smell bad or look funny, I'd use it :-)

    That's what........oh never mind.

Technically honey never goes bad, though.

  • Just had this conversation with my dad (who is a huge cook) last week.  Like honey, it does not go bad it just crystallizes over time.
