Tipping for hair trial?

So I'm having my hair trial next saturday, do I have to tip?  I plan on giving a tip for the hairstyling for my actual wedding, but i feel lik eit probably isn;t necessary for the trial since its kinda to see if I want to hire her.  What do you guys think?  What did you do?

Thanks for the help!

Re: Tipping for hair trial?

  • Think of it this way, your hair trial is taking up a time slot of someone who otherwise would probably tip, so yes you should tip her.  I personally don't understand why people question tipping for a trial.  It is a trial, but she is still performing a service to you.

  • I would tip.

Are you paying her or is the total cost covered on wedding day?  If that's the case, tip her half now and half then of what you would tip for a job well done.

I am not sure why you wouldn't.

  • Oh, wait. I just reread this.  You haven't hired her so you are just paying her to do your hair?

Of course you should tip.  I don't get this question.  At. All.

  • My stylist charged half for the trial what she will for the day of...I tipped 18%...This person will be responsible for making your hair beautiful on your big day..do you want to start the relationship off by stiffing her?  It would be unwise at the very least and in very poor form to boot

  • At my salon it was one package price for wedding day hair/makeup and the trial. They actually "required" that I have a trial. I tipped half the day of the trial and the other half the day of the wedding. So the total price was $200 for trial and day of, and I tipped $20 each time. I agree with pp's that you are using her time and services for the trial and therefore should tip accordingly.

  • I am a hairstylist and I specialize in bridal hair and makeup. Please do not be confused by the word "trial". People always make it seem like it's no big deal when actually it is the most important time you will spend with your stylist. Tipping shouldn't be questioned. This person is taking the time to make sure that he or she is prepared for the day of the big event. Trials are required in my salon the same way that we require shampooing your hair before a cut. It is to ensure that you receive the best possible service. Please don't stiff the poor girl! Also you say you haven't "hired" her yet. But if you went to a new restaurant to try out their menu you wouldn't leave without paying or tipping your waiter just because the food wasn't what you expected. Please keep this in mind.

Thanks everyone...I think I'm a little uneducated about tipping in general, I tend to not know when its appropriate or not.  At least I have this one straight now :)
  • when in doubt tip.
