Tell me you Hiccup remedies

DH has had the hiccups since about 2am.

Funny story - he came out to the living room to check on me and I was actually asleep so he turned off the TV, when he turned around he scared himself in the larger floor length mirror (it was dark).  I woke to his very loud hiccups.

Anyway, everyone has a remedy, what is yours?  He has been known to hiccup for days, but normally it lasts about 5-8 hours.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.

Re: Tell me you Hiccup remedies

  • I have a few:

    A teaspoon of sugar.

    Scare him.

    Rub earlobes.
  • Hiccup for days?!  That would drive me insane!

I get the hiccups all the time.  My friends tease me about it.  Drinking water or any cold drink works for me.  I let all my air out, then slowly drink 10 gulps right in a row while holding my breath.

Another thing that always works is to put a little Bitters on a lemon slice and suck on it.  Tastes terrible but it works!

  • I get them ALL the freaking time.  Nothing really stops them, but I try to hold my breath as long as I can which usually helps a little.

My friendly neighborhood bartender taught me that one.  Except he used a lemon slice, a sugar packet and the bitters.  You suck on it fo as long as you can.

Works everytime.  It also works for upset stomachs.

drink a glass of water upside down, it works for both myself and my husband. I think I read something that Its a matter of distracting yourself from the hiccup, and if you start focusing on something else they go away. I dunno.
  • Spoonful of peanut butter! Always works for me Smile
  • Be sure to come back and let us know which remedy worked!

  • I'm  a bitters girl too...also taught to me by a bartender. Works everytime!

Or if I plug my nose, plug my ears and then take a big gulp of water, that works sometimes, too. Which I GUESS could go along with Blame Canada's remedy if you change a few things around.

This is the remedy I use!  I'll do the spoon full of sugar if we don't have peanut butter.

  • Thanks guys.... We do not have lemons, bitters or peanut butter at home.  So he is going to try those at work.

  • It's about distraction. So anything you do that takes your mind of it, whether that is a terrible sour taste, concentrating on drinking upside down, trying to swallow really dry grainy sugar or unstick PB from the roof of your mouth.

Funny fact: Epocrates, possibly the most common medical PDA resource, recommends digital rectal massage. Tell your husband that and it might straighten him up. ;)

Actually DH had tired most of these and they do not work for him.  Peanut butter has worked once or twice.

His longest stretch was 3 days.  I can't even imagine 3 days of hiccuping.

  • I always take really deep breaths and hold them as long as I can, one right after the other.  It's not a distraction, but it's just a matter of controlling your diaphragm.

  • Fill a glass half way with water. Get two straws, put one in the water and keep one outside the glass. Suck both the straws as fast as you can. Works for me everytime. And it works for everyone at the bar that gets the hiccups while I'm there.

  • Has he ever talked to a doctor about his hiccuping? Hiccups that don't go away for days can sometimes be a symptom of an underlying condition.

Hiccups happen when your diaphragm contracts, and all of the hiccup cures are psychosomatic - basically, they work because you believe they will work. When I was four years old and impressionable, my cousin told me to cure my hiccups by drinking any liquid and squeezing my throat with my hand while swallowing. That works great for me, but if I stopped believing it would work somehow, then it wouldn't.

FI can cure his hiccups simply by thinking about his diaphragm and telling it to stop. He is unduly proud of this.
