What if groom is closer with uncle than own father...

Anyone have suggestions for how to incorporate the grooms father into the wedding when they are not all that close? And also incorporating two uncles, that were like fathers to the groom when he was growing up? What's the etiquette? Obviously we don't want anyone's feelings hurt. So is there an easy way to incorporate all three, without stepping on anyone's toes? Any advice?

  • Typically the groom and father aren't having a lot of togetherness.  I'd just make the uncles ushers or groomsmen and go from there.

  • Can he ask them to be groomsmen?
  • I really don't see the point in over-incorporating people into weddings.  You're not obligated.
  • The groom's dad never really has all that much to do in the wedding anyway. FI's dad is probably just going to dress up and show up. Just get the dad and the uncles bouts or something to mark them as special people.

Wouldn't it be nice to live together in the kind of world where we belong?
  • Like Sarah said, my H's dad didn't do anything special on our wedding day.  He basically attended as a guest.  You could get them bouts or ask them to be ushers or GM, but beyond that I don't think there's much they can do.

And betrothed, I'm disgusted with most of the comments that you have posted. I don't think I've ever read such judgmental comments in my life. I'm so lucky that the girls I speak to on theknot are nothing like you...I would've never come on here for ADVICE if I would've encountered a big a bitch as you. I genuinely feel awful for your children or your future children, and I think it would be irresponsible of YOU not to invest in their future therapy sessions starting now. Because trust me when I tell you honey, they're gonna need it. ~jcaruncho2010

My sister's husband is an only child and his mom died when he was 20 or so...he was 40 when he married my sis, and had his dad stand with him as his best man since they were extremely close. It's the only time I've ever seen anything like this but I thought it was really special.

So he can ask an uncle to be a groomsman, or just get them bouts. PPs are right, not every special person needs a role.
  • The Groom's Dad doesn't really do anything in the typical wedding anyway.  Remember, you don't have to incorporate everyone you love that you're close to in the wedding ceremony.  You also don't have to put things in the program to point out to your guests who means the most to you.  If your FI wants to, he can have a guy's lunch the day of the wedding and invite the uncles and groomsmen.  Or you could just be sure to include the Uncles (and their wives) at the rehearsal dinner.
