Invites Help

How do you address an invite for a couple? For example for my friend, should I have her name first (since I know her and not her spouse) or does her spouse's name go first regardless of relationship to me?

    Ladies first.

If married and different last names:
Ms. Jane Doe and Mr. John Smith

If not married, you don't use "and" and put them on separate lines:
    Ms. Jane Doe
    Mr. John Smith

ETA: For same-sex couples, I think we did put the person we were closer to first, although alphabetical would probably be more proper.
