Books

Let's talk about them.

What are you currently reading?
What's it about?
Do you like it?

I'm currently reading The Perfect Manhattan, however it's not the best book I've ever read. It was ok at first, but now it's hit kind of a lull and I'm not sure if I can finish it. Basically this chick graduated from Columbia and wants to become a screenwriter, so she takes a bartending gig to make ends meet. She nabs a job in the Hamptons working for some VIP club, even though she has little to no bartending experience. At the point I'm at now, she's started having a very unrealistic relationship with a NYC dream boy.

I think that is why I can't get into it anymore. If there was at least a more attainable guy in the mix vying for her attention, it might be a good storyline. However, the male Paris Hilton types rarely go for bartenders, at least for more than one night and that's about all that is going on right now in the story. I'm bad about skipping ahead to the last chapter to see what is in store for me, and from the looks of it, there is a bunch of filler from where I'm at now to the end.

Next up might be An Angel from Hell by Ryan Conklin from the Real World Brooklyn. It's about his experience over in Iraq.

• I heart this thread.

What are you currently reading?
Henry Clay: the Essential American

What's it about?
Henry Clay. The Essential American.

Do you like it?
Yes. It's a little slow at times (which most history books are), but I've always been interested in him since we're both from Kentucky and all.

Next up are Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and The Lost Dogs, which is about Michael Vick's pit bulls. I'm a little scared to start the Vick book because I know it's going to make me very sad and angry.

I love Philippa Gregory!

What are you currently reading?
Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett.

What's it about?
It's about a builder and a Prior who want to build a cathedral and all the crazy shenanigans everyone gets into, like, destitution, corruption, and rape.

Do you like it?
So far I adore it.

• Ali, I don't think I can read that based on what Pink has said about it in the past. :(

[QUOTE]I've been trying to read Eat, Pray, Love. It's not as interesting as it's made out to be though. I haven't seen the movie and refuse to until I finish the book. I did hear the movie is better than the book though. I guess I better start reading so I can see.

I've been afraid about this as well. Part of me just wants to see the movie and part of me feels that I need to read the book first. I thought about listening to the audiobook on one of my road trips, but when I heard an excerpt it almost put me to sleep... and it was only 30 seconds long. :-/
• I'm seriously just reading school books. Things about the Cold War, the entertainment industry in the 1930s and immigrants in California.

Recent books I read and enjoyed:

Olive Kitteridge
In Other Rooms, Other Wonders
The Little Stranger

I'm planning on reading the new Artemis Fowl book, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (and sequels) and a few classics, like Thomas Hardy, when I'm done with school. I have lots of fun stuff loaded on ym kindle.
my read shelf:
Meredith's book recommendations, liked quotes, book clubs, book trivia, book lists (read shelf)

• I'm reading Pride & Prejudice right now. The one without the zombies.
• I just finished Hunger Games and am about to start on Pride and Prejudice. The one with the zombies. I need to get Catching Fire like, yesterday.

I've been meaning to pick this up for years. I should get around to that.
• You should, it is good for a laugh!

Next I have waiting in line is City of Ashes, #2 in The Mortal Instruments series which Alix told me about. Good stuffs.

• What are you currently reading? Harry Potter & The Philosopher's Stone.
What's it about? Boy wizard, Hogwarts, save-the-world and all that awesome.
Do you like it? No. I love it. To death.

What are you currently reading? Firelight (Sophie Jordan).
What's it about? Dragon-human people. It's a bit Twilightish I think.
Do you like it? Yes, surprisingly I do.

What are you currently reading? The Way of All Flesh (Samuel Butler)
What's it about? It's comples. It's kind of a novel following a eighteen/nineteenth century family.
Do you like it? I'm not entirely sure yet.

Andalso, Good Omens rocked my socks. It's fuckinghilarious. Seriously. I <3 Neil Gaiman. Andalsoagain, Isn't Mortal Instruments just great? I love Jace. He's better than Edward.

• oh yes! and since I was on vaca when I finished I forgot to tell you that I *gasped* when I found out about Jace and you-know-who.

I accidentally spoiled it for myself like I did with Shiver because I looked up City of Ashes on my hold list and saw that the synopsis starts with "so and so and his sister..." blerrrrg.

Maybe I actually won't spoil the next book for myself!

• DON'T SPOIL CITY OF GLASS! DO NOT DO IT!

Seriously if you think the first two are good, it's at least a thousand times better. Honest.

• Just finished Gone with the Wind, and loved every page of it. About to start on The Shack... I actually have no idea what it's about, but MIL and H both read it and insist I read it next, so I conceded.

• Mandysmear- I loved the Hunger Games and Catching Fire! I have a little literary crush on Finnick in the second book. Mockingjay (the last one) isn't quite as good, but it was still nice to get an ending to the story.

Simply Fated- Pillars of the Earth was great! It has a sequel that is equally as good, though takes place 200 or so years later, so doesn't have any of the same characters.

Anysunrise- I adore Terry Brooks. I love series books (I get character attached). I've been searching for another great fantasy series, but have sort of hit a wall. Did you like Wheel of Time series? I've heard a lot of mixed reviews on it.

What are you currently reading? Team of Rivals
What's it about? It's a biography of Abraham Lincoln
Do you like it? Love it! For a biography, it is very engaging and the characters are very "alive".

I love it, because it was my first big series, and I've been reading it for years. It does REALLY drag after the 4th book until about the end of the 9th. The latest is definitely a change (what with the different author and all) but it moved along a lot faster than, well, any of them, so that made up for it for me. I'd recommend it if you have a lot of time, because it's definitely a long series.

• I refuse to get an e-reader. I like my books to have pages. It definitely takes up condospace though.

Also, while we're on books, a RAVE for anyone who liked Twilight/Mortal Instruments/Shiver&Linger or just Young Adult novels in general; read Firelight. Seriously. I'm loving it. Hard.
