Outdoor Ceremony & Indoor Reception

The ceremony is on a deck and the reception is in a ballroom (in which the deck is attached, so no walking). I feel like a guest would like to know ahead of time that one is outside and the other is inside. Is there a way to clarify this for them? Or is it unnecessary? Our invitations as of now say...

"Name of venue"
"City, State"

"Dinner and dancing to follow on-site"

Re: Outdoor Ceremony & Indoor Reception

  • If you think additional info is necessary, you can put it on your wedding website.

But I wouldn't worry about it unless the ceremony is super long and/or the weather will be very hot or very cold.

  • Unless you're concerned that they'll freeze during the ceremony b/c it will be cold, or some other weird weather circumstance, I think you'll be fine w/what you have. You could kind of spread by word of mouth that the ceremony will be outside, but I don't think you need to put it on the invite.

  • The ceremony should be short, less than a half hour for sure. It's in mid-July, but at night so it has the potential to be hot.
  • We had ours in the evening in mid August.  We put the info that it was an outdoor ceremony on our website and also kind of word of mouth.  Like I told my female friends they probably didn't want to wear spike heels on the grass.

  • I had mine outdoors at night in November (but in south LA, it wasn't cold). We didn't put it on the invitation, but spread it by word of mouth.

  • I agree with LC, word of mouth sounds the like best course of action here.  You don't need to specify on the invite that the reception is indoors and the ceremony is outdoors.

  • Does the deck have a name?

My wedding invite said something like this:

    Venue Name Rooftop Gardens
    Address...

Reception to follow in the West Ballroom

  • We put info about the location on our website, including pics of the garden where the ceremony would take place and the hall where the reception would be. We also spread the word via email and such that we had an unusually cold summer last year (we married in September, which is usually Indian Summer here) so people coming from out of town would know to bring a wrap or sweater, just in case. It turned out to be great weather though.

  • We did the same thing (ceremony on a deck, reception in attached ballroom) and didn't mention anything on the invites. It was the end of April and it did end up being a little chilly, but most of our family and friends knew what was planned ahead of time. We also wrote something on our wedding website, if anyone actually took the time to look.

  • Ok, great! I'll keep it how it is. Our website has a picture of each location so they can find out there. Thanks!
