when do we actually do a wedding registry?  i am aware of the fact that we are more than a year out from our wedding - but when do we actually go through doing our registry?

Re: when to register??

  • We had a 17-month engagement, and I don't think we registered until about 8 months before the wedding.

We decided to wait because I wanted to space out exciting things for the wedding since we had the long engagement
  • I would wait until a few weeks before invitations go out for your first shower.  If you're not having a shower, then NO SOONER THAN 6 months before your wedding.   Things get discontinued all the time, and it sucks to have someone purchase half of your bedding set just to have it discontinued before it can be fulfilled.

  • I have read to register fairly early because there are some people who might want to buy you a gift as soon as they hear you are engaged. However, when we registered 8 months or so out, the woman at Macy's said that we should maybe wait til nearer to the wedding to register for linens and things like that, as things are changed and discontinued seasonally.

<div>That was why we did it around 8ish months. It may have even been 6...I don't remember, but I also kept up with what was in stock at BB&B and Target, and immediately deleted discontinued items and would update with something else.</div><div>
</div><div>In the beginning, items won't go flying off the registry. When the invitations for the shower are about to go out, check the registry for discontinued items and get it updated to avoid problems, and maybe only register for essentials early on, and add seasonal things later. (Bedding, dishes etc)</div>
  • We did it about 7 months before the wedding, and FMIL seemed to kind of side-eye that we were thinking of that so early. Whatever, that was a holiday weekend and the only time we really had free to do it.

We registered more than a year out, and I got some things for graduation from law school.  I don't think it's a problem to register now, as long as you know to watch it after major seasonal sales (ie: holidays).

We registered about 7 months out -- no one has bought anything from it yet other than birthday presents from our parents. At least at C&B we've had exceedingly little turnover since we created it.

  • I registered way early.  Originally the wedding was scheduled for this year so I registeres about 8 months out.  Then we postponed to next year, so now I was close to a year and a half out.  It does suck if half your bedding gets discontinued, but I would definitely keep an eye on the registry, check to make sure things are in stock especially after sales and holidays, and if for any reason something is discontiued you can always exchange it for something that matches.  It's not the ideal solution, especially since your guests are thinking that they are buying you a particular item that you will love and cherish and have for years to come, not just exchange after the wedding, but It's not like you are completely stuck with something that doesnt match anything else.  To prevent that from happening though, definitely update the registry when you can and if you get closer to the wedding and showers maybe check to make sure that you whole bedding set or dinner ware is something new that will be in the store for a while.

I registered a year out. But I didn't tell anyone. I knew as soon as I got the gun in my hand I would turn into the green eyed monster and start screaming 'gimmegimmegimme'. Which of course I, but no one knew that. Then I went online a month later and deleted the similar items, the things I really didn't need/want, the things I don't have room for and the discontinued stuff. Now that people are actually buying gifts for me I know I am registered for a reasonable number of gifts, in a reasonable price range/spread and that is only the stuff I truly want, will use and appreciate. I see nothing wrong with registering early as long as you don't brandish about the fact that you're thinking all about the gifts so early on.
