RSVP decline w/check gift

One of my elderly relatives declined on her RSVP with a check gift.  What is the proper etiquette here?  Do we send a thank-you right away or after the wedding?

I would deposit the check and write a thank-you note as soon as I could.  Say something that you're sorry they can't come to the wedding but thank you for the monetary gift.

Send a thank you right away and cash it now.  It lets them know that you received it and they don't have to worry about the money coming out on some random future date.  Unless they post-dated it.

Yup right away.  Old people especally like to know if you've received their $.

I'll ditto everyone else. Also, I got one of those from my great-aunt in August and sent a TY note right away. She was happy and mentioned it to my dad when she saw him a few weeks later.
