NER: USPS Stops Sending Mail On Saturdays

So. This happened: Click

The first thing I thought of was "Crap, this WOULD have to happen before I send my invitations."

The second thing I thought of was "I think my mailman was ahead of the game on this because he comes when he feels like it anyways. 4pm on Monday, no mail for three days, then a box of mail at 10am Friday? Sure. Why not?"

I alternate between feeling irate that the price of mail goes up and up and now there is even less time to mail it...and feeling scared for my friends who are postal workers.

Re: NER: USPS Stops Sending Mail On Saturdays

  • Meh... I boycott the USPS as much as possible.  Terrible customer service every time I go in one.
  • Unfortunately, the USPS is stuck in a very tight spot.  They are a federal agency, with Congress having a certain amount of control over them, yet they are independent and do not get any government subsidy for operations.  They are required to bow to the governments demands about how they operate, yet are criticized when they try to do something to make it better.

Sadly, it makes sense due to email and other electronic communications.  They won't be completely shutting down, because they will still be doing package delivery on Saturdays.

My dad worked for the USPS for 30+ years; he retired just shy of 20 years ago.  I worry that this may have an affect on his pension/health benefits and how that will affect him in general.

I'm sorry this may affect your wedding invitations, but I can't imagine it will have to large an impact.

This. Completely. I don't get any mail got like a week then get a whole mailbox full, and it includes bills that are due that day. It frustrates me so much. I don't really care that they are stopping Saturday delivery, but if my mail person is already not doing a great job, it's only going to get worse.
  • This won't go into effect until August.

Honestly - if your mail carrier is really that bad, you should report them.  Not delivering the mail timely is against the law.  If it's really a problem he/she should be reported to the local Postmaster; if that doesn't do any good, send it up the food chain and call in the local Postal Inspector.  They will investigate anything that may be mail tampering.

Awesome. I didn't even know that was an option. I'll look into it. Thank you. I might give it a bit so I can write down dates or something, but if it continues, I'll definitely do that.

Absolutely.  My dad was an Inspector, so a bit about this stuff.

Spend a week or two (maybe even a full month so all the bills have time to come in) documenting the timing of your mail.

You know the companies you deal with that are sending bills are not going to send them so they arrive when they are due.  Make a note of the postmarks on them as well.  Photocopy envelopes, whatever, to make sure you have a thorough history of the issues.

  • Since I moved I haven't had any issues, however at my old place, the mail carrier would only come to my box if I had mail coming to me. I had bills/out going mail sitting in my box for 2 or 3 days one time because they never took my mail. I dropped it in my mailbox as I was leaving for work one day, than I went to my now FH's for a couple days and when I went home it was still there. Shocked that no one stole the money in my out going bills.

</div><div>Oh, I know. It was more just like, when anyone says anything about the USPS right now, that's the only thing I think of. Like postage going up (AGAIN), or whatnot.

I always urge everyone who has any mail issues to ALWAYS report them.  Tampering with, not delivering, throwing away or doing anything with mail besides delivering it where it's supposed to go is a federal crime.

Like PP, lots of folks don't know that there is a course of action to be taken when it happens - starting with the local Postmaster.

That sounds like something is going on at the post office and not just with the carrier. I mean, unless the mail carrier is keeping and hiding your mail from you, which is hopefully not the case.

Why would you think you couldn't report someone or request better service? Contact your postmaster.

Out of curiosity, what else is your mail carrier messing up on?
