Interesting/Amusing Article

From MSNBC:

Laptops Lead to "Toasted Skin Syndrome":

Have you ever worked on your laptop computer with it sitting on your lap, heating up your legs? If so, you might want to rethink that habit.

Doing it a lot can lead to "toasted skin syndrome," an unusual-looking mottled skin condition caused by long-term heat exposure, according to medical reports.

In one recent case, a 12-year-old boy developed a sponge-patterned skin discoloration on his left thigh after playing computer games a few hours every day for several months.

Another case involved a Virginia law student who sought treatment for the mottled discoloration on her leg. Dr. Kimberley Salkey, who treated the young woman, was stumped until she learned the student spent about six hours a day working with her computer propped on her lap. The temperature underneath registered 125 degrees.

Salkey, an assistant dermatology professor at Eastern Virginia Medical School, said that under the microscope, the affected skin resembles skin damaged by long-term sun exposure.

In the past, "toasted skin syndrome" has occurred in workers whose jobs require being close to a heat source, including bakers and glass blowers, and, before central heating, in people who huddled near potbellied stoves to stay warm.

Chronic, prolonged skin inflammation can potentially increase chances for squamous cell skin cancer, which is more aggressive than the most common skin cancer. But Mancini said it's unlikely computer use would lead to cancer since it's so easy to avoid prolonged close skin contact with laptops.

Do you do this? Because I do [read: did] it all the time. I think I'll be investing in one of those beanbag-laptop-desk thingies.

  • I just had a eureka moment. The top of my thigh, right above my knee started itching last night. So I scratched it and all this dead skin came off and I was like WTF? I've been sitting with my laptop there for hours on end. That had to be what caused the itchiness and dead skin. Grossness.

  • Yeah I saw that article yesterday and definitely got nervous.  I always sit with my laptop on my lap, as I am also doing right now.  Haha I'm hoping that since its cold out and I have a blanket on, that the blanket is giving me extra protection.

  • OMG LC! I've had that too and I couldn't figure out what it was from. I'd been freaking applying moisturizer and baby powder like it was going out of style and nothing helped. Bazinga!

  • Laptops can cook your eggs in your ovaries too.  True story.

I love how "hattin" you are in your new sig, LC.

  • Yep, I notice that I get splotches like that on my leg if the laptop gets hot.  Oops.

  • Glad you posted this. Mystery solved. I though I might've had a flesh eating bacteria disease. I have one of those thingies that you set your laptop on, but I use it for a mouse pad, instead of sitting it on my lap. Einstein right here.

  • I do not. I like to have my laptop on a desk or table so it's closer to eye level.

  • LC- please don't take this the wrong way.  Since the only idea of what you have of people is what they post or is in their sig pics, I always thought you were like a country girl wearing bandanas and baggy clothes and what not.  Not that there's anything wrong with that, thats just how I pictured you.  Now between your dress pic and your new sig pic I feel like you are a whole new poster to me!  Its just funny to me and shows me how much I rely on sig pics to recognize people.

Haha, thats cool.  I spend most days in wind pants and hoodies.  I love that since I'm a phys ed teacher (well, when I'm actually employed) wind pants and hoodies are my professional attire.  But as long as I keep a wedding pic up nobody knows what a slob I look like 90% of the time.

Well, now that I'm unemployed I've been wearing sweatpants and t shirts 95% of the time. I have to go run a couple errands this afternoon and the worst part about it is that I don't really want to put on real, going out in public clothes.

Haha I am also unemployed and going through the same feelings.  Last night I had to run to the store quick and definitely went in bum clothes since I didn't care.  I figure we've only lived here for 3 weeks so nobody knows me yet to recognize me.  I'm supposed to go to dinner tonight with me new boss of the job I'm starting, and I'm really dreading getting dressed and doing my hair.

  • It's amazing how quickly grooming habits (and I don't mean necessities like showering and tooth brushing) become a pain in the ass when you stop doing them on a regular basis.

  • That's disturbing...and also kind of gross.  I used to have my laptop directly on my lap all the time until FI started insisting that I use his laptop pad.
