  • Oh jeez, I like pretty much everything but stout. I order local craft brews whenever available, but I also like some more mainstream things. There's Yuengling, which is the cheap beer of choice around these parts (awesome), Magic Hat #9, the Dogfish Head IPA, then your Sam Adams varieties, Heineken... I'll drink pretty much anything. Going to a liquor store is starting to be like going to a bookstore for me.

It's pretty hoppy, like a lot of IPAs tend to be, so if you like your beer to be really substantial and flavorful, that's a good thing to get. Not something for a first time beer drinker :)

    I agree with all this.

Some of my recent faves are anything by Allagash, which is based in Portland, ME (the Allagash White is gooood and cheaper than some of their options), a bunch of stuff that's local to LA, and then Fat Tire, Leinenkugel, and hefeweizens like Franziskaner. My favorite are Belgian-style beers, though. Not like Stella (though that's good), but like Trappist ales, tripels, quadrupels and belgian whites.

Oh and Sapporoand Asahi are good, cause they taste kind Belgian-y, but they're Japanese! Whaaa?

Right now we have the Alaskan summer ale (I think) and Blue Moon Rising Moon in our fridge.

  • Sucrets - I get what you're saying.  What I was meaning to recommend ( and may have mis-typed) was Budweiser.  Myself and most of my friends from college all felt like it was an old man's beer and really had never drank it before.  But my ex-bf had a wheat allergy and had to drink rice based beers and I realized I really like the taste of regular ole old man Bud as an every day kind of beer.

I mean think about it, most of us rag on Coor's light or miller light or Bud Light, but have you ever had an MGD?  You know what I'm saying?

That being said, craft beers are awesome, just depending on the area and where you go, many are still difficult to find.

I know there are actually quite a few local brewers - when I was trying out this 100mile diet thing, I contacted a bunch of breweries to find out if they fit into the diet (due to the yeast, they didnt). I think going on a beer tour might be fun! My wedding anniversary is coming up this summer so maybe I will take my husband to go do that, I think that would be fun. We live in the center of the niagara wine region, and hate wine so we never get to go on tours!
  • cbv - I know they get a bad rap a lot of the time, and I actually have had MGD.  I've also had the fresh stuff at Busch Gardens and man is it so much better than the bottles!  I still prefer something with a little bit more substance, though.

  • I totally know what you mean when you compare fresh to older stuff.  I don't know about you, but in my younger years I would have never believed you if you told me beer went bad.  Of course, some nights we probably would have resorted to drinking mouthwash if we had to ;)

The problem I've found with a lot of my friends is that if you aren't a big beer drinker, and start out on heavier beers, sometimes the more intense taste profiles can scare you off.  I know I had to start out with really light beers that now might seem even watery, but at the time were still more than I was used to.  I think I am more like you at this point though, where I can enjoy a beer with a heartier taste, but it took me awhile to get there.  Especially with some of the different european beers!  You don't have to make yourself like them, but you have to get used to it.
  • All of this talk of beer REALLY makes me want one.

    *sigh*

    Hah im sorry sucrets!
  • I'm working my way though a sixer of Kinnebunkport Brewing Company Blueberry ale. It was $6 at Trader Joe's, and quite delicious.

I really love most Sam Adam's brews (especially Boston lager, Octoberfest, Summer, and Cherry Wheat), Harp, Blue Moon (with a slice of orange!), Bass, Smithwick's, and Yeungling.

DH has Celiac, so when we have beer at home it's gluten free Redbridge or Bard's Tale, or Woodchuck ciders.
  • I recently discovered this viena lager from trader joes that FRICKIN ROCKS. You should all try it now.

I also love Schlafly No 15, but unless you live within about 300 miles of St. Louis that means nothing to you.

Hoegaarden is awesome too, but I was really upset when I found out that it's not pronounced ho-garden. Took some fun out of it.
