Are you freaking KIDDING me??

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - A team of surgeons from Kleinert Kutz and Associates and the University of Louisville are preparing to perform yet another hand transplant in the next few hours at the Jewish Hospital Hand Care CenterSurgeons plan to document the surgery, which will be the facility's first double hand transplant, by using Twitter, to provide short, real-time updates as the procedure takes place.

Because twitter is the most important thing when TRANSPLANTING HANDS. Give me a fucking break.

  • Dude, I work in surgery.  If they ever told me to send tweets for them, so help me god...
A hand transplant?  That's interesting... I've seen them put back on hands and fingers, but never transplant them...  interesting..

Ours was the first sucessful hand transplant, ever. And now we're the first to do a double. It's a big deal there.

  • I read them. It's completely ridiculous. A publicity stunt to be sure.

  • Anesthesia has plenty of time to tweet.  They're usually reading or playing on the iPhones anyway :)

  • The updates are being handled by a fellow (doctor done with residency and doing a few more years specializing even further in their chosen field) that isn't participating in the surgery; there's probably a lot of idle time between major things she has to observe as part of her fellowship education so not really a big deal if she tweets updates.

  • It's still freaking weird. Its surgery. I'm pretty sure a social networking site is appropriate media for something like this.

  • Will there be twitpix too? Because, if there is, that's a lot to stomach.

  • If it's a research hospital, publicity can equal grant money. :-)

  • And considering the Library of Congress has gotten the rights to all the tweets ever, this becomes part of the Library of Congress archive, which is pretty nifty.

  • Yeah, I was thinking that this isn't actually that big of a deal because there are people who aren't always in the act of doing something anyway. :)  Actually, if you ask my mom (an RN for over 30 years) most doctors never do anything anyway. hahaha
  • I think it was just more shocking than anything, ya know? I know there's people standing around, watching. But it's just weird to me. Like the couple who updated FB before they said I Do. Social media taken too far IMO.

  • I think that's really cool. they're taking advantage of new social media platforms to educate people about complicated surgeries. it takes these really revolutionary things that people are doing and brings them out in public to common people.

as long as the Dr's not all "gotta put down the scalpel and tweet!" I see nothing at all wrong with it.
