semi-destination wedding invitation etiquette (with local reception afterwards)

My fiance lives in Atlanta, and I live in Ottawa, Canada. The wedding will be in Atlanta next september.

There are people I would like to invite/have at my wedding, but I am pretty sure almost none of them will be able to make it. We'll be having a reception in Canada after the wedding in Atlanta, and all those people will be invited to that. Should I send them wedding invitations, even though I know they can't make it? I assume yes?

My bridal shower will be here in Canada as well. Can I invite those people to my bridal shower, even though again they most likely won't be able to come to the wedding? I want them to be a part of our wedding and celebrations, but I don't want to be rude or seem like I'm trying to get gifts or something.

Im just not sure how to properly structure all this!  thanks for any advice/help!

  • You are correct on all counts. It is nice to be invited anyway,
  • You say you would like to invite the Ottawa friends/relatives to your wedding.  So do it.

If some of them come, that's great.  If some of them can't come, oh well.

Yes, to invite anyone to a shower, that person must be on the wedding invitation list.

  • Just make sure you have room for them at the venue if indeed they do decide to make the trip for the wedding!
