Is it appropriate to...?

Is it okay to contact the person who set up the interview to find out the dress code of the office?  Style here and in Copenhagen is much less formal than the US so I'm really unsure.

Re: Is it appropriate to...?

  • I would think so, especially if you explain the differences in customs/styles.

  • I think I would over dress for the interview.  Then then observe for when you start working.
  • Ditto NCV.

  • I always ask and then dress a step up. I think it's fine to ask. I've worked in some super casual environments and if I wore a suit I would have looked very out of place.
  • I would probably just dress up for the interview and then after you get the job adjust your wardrobe to match everyone else.  I don't think they would look down upon you for being overdressed.

This. Even if you go quite formal and everyone there is casual, it still shows the people interviewing you that you cared enough about your appearence/presentation to them that you wanted to dress to impress from the initial get-go.

  • Someone asked about the dress code for an interview I was helping with, and my coworker and I both had the reaction of "dude, just dress professionally, err on the side of overdressed, don't ask," so I wouldn't. If you think it's more casual, I would probably still wear dress pants and a blazer but with a fun colored blouse or do separates rather than a suit, but I also don't think anyone's going to penalize you for looking too professional.
  • I wouldn't feel comfortable asking.  I would take NCV's advice and overdress.

We have a casual dress code, but if an applicant came in to an interview wearing jeans and a t-shirt (perfectly acceptable attire among our employees), it would still most likely be taken as a sign of disrespect by the hiring manager.

  • Yeah, I just don't want to look like I'm trying too hard. *sigh*  It doesn't help that all of my professional clothes don't fit anymore. :(
  • I agree with PPs, dress nice for the interview and then observe what others are wearing.

But trying "too" hard is a good thing outside of The Knot!

The last senior staff accountant we hired got the job because he tried "too hard."  My bosses raved about his enthusiasm for weeks after meeting with him.  They were really taken with how excited he was by the prospect of working for the company.  In their minds, it translated (rightly, in his case) into dedication and commitment.

Yeah, I wasn't going to wear that kind of casual. :)  I'm just saying it's generally more acceptable to like, weaer skinny pants and a colorful top or something. lol
  • Oh, I know.  You have a better sense of style than anyone I know.  :)  (Granted, all of my friends are nerds and gamers... but, still.)  I just mentioned jeans and t-shirts because that's our dress code here.  Typical tech company.

  • i would just dress conservatively (i.e. suit).  calling ahead will annoy the person and show a lack of research/common sense.

That's kind of mean.  It's a completely different country ffs.   I think I'm entitled to be concerned about this.  I've asked H to find out from his boss, who's wife used to work there what it is, but she hasn't worked there for 6 years.
  • How does your H dress to go to work in Sweden?  I'd go for the female equivalent of that, maybe dress pants, a nice sweater and a pretty scarf.

  • Darn it!

Okay, then I stand by my suggestion of dress pants, a nice top/sweater and a pretty scarf.
  • lol... Their group actually decided to have "Formal Friday's" because they never got a chance to dress up.

I'll probably see if I can find a way to get my wool pants to fit. Stupid fat butt.
  • I'm so excited about your interview!

  • Thanks NCV! Me too!  If it works out, I may be back in the UK often. OOOOOOH!! :D
  • We can go shopping at the charity shops in Kensington, rich people give away nice stuff!  Plus the cupcake place is there.  Red Velvet, yum.

I want to come to Sweden as well.  :-)
  • lol!!  Why didn't you tell me this before?!

And yes. Come to visit. :D
  • i understnad its a different country.  but they will know that you are applying from a different country.  they will assume that how you dress is what is appropriate for where you are from and take that into consideration.
  • Where I work is very casual (jeans and T-shirts for a lot of people), but interviewees still wear slacks with a nice blouse or sweater and can go either way on the jacket. If it's a more casual place, I don't think you need a full on suit to interview, but I also wouldn't think poorly of someone who shows up in a suit.
