Vacuums (maybe specifically Dysons)

Do any of you have a vacuum you love?  Ours isn't that great, and we're going to adopt a kitten soon, so I want to get one that is good at picking up cat hair.  I have my eye on the Dyson Animal because it is on sale at the Conran Shop.  Is it worth it?  Any other recs?  Thanks!

We got the Bissell Pet Hair Eraser and it's great.

whatever you do, do not get a cannister/bagless vacuum (i.e. Dyson)If you are an allergy sufferer, you have to open the cannister and dump all the dust/dirt/dander that you have just picked up. My allergist has said that these vacuums, as well as the ones with the HEPA filters are really not that effective.  Bag vacuums are still the way to go, even if they are old-fashioned.

i have a dyson and love it... only complaint is the sucker is very heavy.  once it's on, it moves smoothly and easily, it's just a pain up and down stairs.  picks up my puppy hair (the animal vs. the regular series has nearly the same suction so make sure you check the specs before falling victim to clever marketing), goes from bare floor to carpet fairly well (the knob is a bit sticky to switch sometimes and my wood floors i still usually go over with swiffer after) doesn't scratch, cleans/dumps easily... okay i sound like i work for dyson now ;)

oh and to rebut pp, yes the dyson is bagless which means you dont have to worry about bags, and both DH & i are allergy sufferers and as long as you clean properly (ie either dump outside into bag, don't empty from 2' from the can, etc...) you'd be fine.  the hepa filters are great, but we've had no issues cleaning the dyson.  i prefer bagless... i also like seeing when it's full through the plastic vs. wondering if the bag is going to burn/explode.. like my mother's used to growing up.  yuk!

Allie, which model do you have?  We actually have stairs in our new apartment, which is a bizarre concept to me after living without stairs for so long!  But probably any vacuum is a pain up and down stairs, right?  (again, have not lived with stairs as an adult!)

i like the new ball one, it's lighter and just cute looking ;)  i have the pink DC-07.  it's discontinued because they make a new one every few months i think, but it's still pretty awesome.  my sister bought me it back in sept'07.

I agree with Allie, I LOVE my Dyson Animal, with two long hair cats it really makes a difference.

I also highly recommend the Dyson Animal.  I have the DC25 (ball) and I LOVE it!  I have a dog who sheds 24/7/365 and it picks up her hair really well.  It's 16 pounds, so it's kind of a pain to go up and down the stairs, but it's not hard to manuever at all.  I use a plastic grocery bag to empty the canister into when it gets full.  I usually have to empty it after every room which is sort of a pain, but at least I know I'm picking stuff up!  I just hand the bag on a doorknob nearby so it's handy if I need to empty.
