Poll: buttercream vs. fondant

Starting to look at cake designs. Not really talking to the baker until December/January, but I wanted start looking at pictures now. What do you prefer in your wedding cake? Is design more important than taste, or vice versa?

I was more for taste then design. DH, his only request was cannoli cream. lol.

For us buttercream is included. When we went to the bakery and showed them a picture of the cake we liked they told us they could do it in buttercream so the option was easy for us. Honestly had they told us they couldnt reproduce it, I would have found a design they could reproduce. We are having a viennese (sp) hour so I couldnt see spending extra $ for fondant considering half the people wont eat anyways

buttercream all the way, most people don't know to take the fondant off, so they wind up hating the cake.If I was having a special grooms type cake I would do fondant but I want my cake to taste good, no one cares about the look IMO.

Buttercream tastes much better and is cheaper.  That's what we used.Fondant gives a nice look but mainly tastes awful and is more expensive.

Buttercream for sure although I am not really a buttercream person I would much rather whipped cream. IMO taste is way more important then design!

I was going to say the same - go with taste all the way. I could give a crap what someone's cake looks like - take mine for example looked awful (was included and I see why) but it tasted bangin so I was happy

i LOVE buttercream and will definitely be going with that! fondant looks nice but it's disgusting.

Buttercream. I actually may be in the minority but while fondant can do some cool things, I actually don't like the way it looks all over a cake. We had buttercream & I thought it looked beautiful!

my cake was hazelnut with canoli filling and buttercream icing.  it was freakin' delicious.  i do not like fondant nor do i care how perfect it can look.  cakes are meant to be eaten.

I'm really not a cake person, so to me, it doesn't particularly matter how it tastes, BUT, I ruled with my checkbook and buttercream was free :)

I like fondant but I know most people enjoy buttercream, plus that was included.  I personally hate buttercream and might be the only freak that likes fondant!

Just peel the fondant off, there is buttercream underneath.

To be honest, I really cared more about visual appeal considering we had an insane Viennese so we got a fondant design. My cake ended up tasting awesome. Fondant actually wasn't bad on my cake at all and we thought it was tasty. PLUS, you can always peel off the fondant.

Buttercream.  Fondant tastes awful and I don't think it looks that much better either.  I personally like the more organic look.

I love buttercream. Fondant is hard and chewy to me. Like my cake soft.

I would do whatever tastes better. I'd rather have a yummy cake than a super-pretty cake.
