Wedding Vows & Ceremony Discussions

quaker certificate

I'm going to be using the Quaker Marriage Certificate in our wedding. We will be getting a marriage license from the state. We just liked the sentiment of the Quaker Certificate. Does anyone know the order in which we would have guest sign that certificate? I read in one place that it was as they leave the church. Another said after the vows, but before the ring exchange. Does anyone have any suggestions of how to do it without a lot of interruption to the ceremony? We'd like it to be a fairly quick ceremony. No readings. No unity anything. I was thinking of doing it beforehand in lieu of a guestbook with a description of what it is and why we are doing it next to it. I just think that loses a bit of it since they're signing something saying they witnessed our vows and at that point they haven't. Any opinions?

Re: quaker certificate

  • Are you Quaker? From your post it sounds like you are not. As a result it is a bit disrespectful to a religion. I strongly suggest agaist this. It seems tacky and disrespectful to a religion.
  • I had never heard of Quaker wedding certificates, so I Googled them. I think it's more of a style of ceremony/vows, and all the witnesses sign a certificate. Kind of like signing a guest book. Some of the sights had very pretty artwork on the certificates, with lines for all the witnesses to sign. http://www.calligraphica.com/certificates2.html
  • I would suggest you have them sign as they are leaving the ceremony, after having witnessed the vows/ceremony. Neat idea, by the way. The certificate would make a very nice keepsake.
  • We are doing one in leu of a guestbook too. I don't understand why any one would think they are disrespectful because it's not like they have anything about the religion in them. They are basically just a statement of vows that all your guests sign. .
