Photographer at $3k to $3.5K with some artistic/edge

Hi Everyone,

After looking at a few photographers my fiance and I seem to be leaning toward a photograher with a more artistic than traditional style and album. Artist European (link below) is someone we really loved but the cost just seems to be too much after we added all the options that we wanted. We're looking for a photographer with some edge but gives us our photo rights, nice personal album plus parent albums for the cost I mentioned in my subject line. Please check out the link below and see if you have recommendations that fit this. Thank you so much everyone!! I really value everyone's advice here.

We used Jennifer Boyle (out of Brooklyn) and she fits in that budget and was really great.

I'm afraid I don't have a recommendation for you.  I thought the photography was nice; they're clearly talented photographers, but I don't like the way they processed or "photoshopped" the images.  A little too funky for our traditional tastes.

The only thing I can tell you is that as soon as you want something highly stylized like this, it's going to cost more money.  These kind of photographers define a narrow artsy look and reputation for themselves and their customers seek them out for it.  A few brides here really like Matt Rainey (sp).  He's a very good photographer but he also charges ~$4k just to shoot, no albums.  But the people that want his look REALLY want his look and are willing to pay to get it.  I don't know that you're going to find someone with that kind of edgy approach in the $3k range.

I think Sean Patrick has a similar style.  I can't think of anyone else at any price range in the area who does that style of Photoshop work.  But honestly it isn't my style so I never paid much attention to people like that.

I really liked CLB Photography's style and I think they are like the photographers you posted.

We saw Sean Patrick.  If I'm remembering right, he shoots for $2,500 but you also receive a credit for prints and albums; I don't remember how much, though.  He certainly fits within your price range.  That said, I'll have to say that I don't "get" him.  We visited him early in the process before we understood the different styles of photography and ultimately found that his style was not for us.  That said, his sites talks about him being edgy and out there.  While he's certainly not traditional, I didn't think he was THAT edgy and out there and probably not in the same class as Artist European (IMO)

Sean Patrick used to work for Artist European before he made his own company. I can't think of anyone besides him who does the high editing in that price range.

Being married is a real thriller! =)

We met w/ both Sean Patrick & Artist European and even though Gerta (from AEP) was a little pricer, we were a lot happier with her overall work.  My wedding is in 36 days (AHH!!!) so I'll have reviews of how working with AEP was after that.  Both suggestions work the same way that you have to pay about $2500 for them but that amount is then credited towards the purchase of either your album, pictures, or parents albums.
Oh! I'm not sure if it's common w/ others, but AEP allows a payment plan so you pay a set amount each month until the wedding.

One other thing to keep in mind -- your photos are something that you'll have for the length of your marriage.  Few elements of the wedding are like that.  So when considering photographers, I'd remember that what is cool and "artsy" and edgy in 2010 or 2011 may look very dated very quickly.  Photography trends go by very quickly (hey, 5 years ago photographers seemed to think you had to take photos on a diagonal for them to be artistic -- looks super dated to me already).  You may want to consider whether you want to invest your money and your memories in a style that you may not like a few years from now.

+1 for AE.  They did an amazing job from the day of to the final images.  I wouldn't of done it any different.

Also, the CD of image we have are the natural, color corrected images.  The artwork is only done on images you purchase for print or images you select for your album.  So we have the best of both worlds.  An album edited to our liking with very creative artwork, killer looking wall portraits, and the natural images in case we ever want to do something else with them.

Her albums look a bit different than the sample images on her website.  They are just put together so well in how the images blend together, and her black and white conversions are to die for.  You really need to see an album in person.

We also liked the giant 16x16 albums she provides with fold outs, so some images are 16x32.......really unique.

I went and saw both Sean Patrick and Artist European...I personally thought they came out to about the same amount with the options we wanted..  Gerda is AMAZING!!  She has been my favorite vendor so far. I would really say AE all the way! If you have any questions feel free to PM me. :)

We loved Gerda as well but she's much too expensive after we added in the second photographer, extra albums, rights to photos. It went way above the $3500 mark.
