I did mine in early December for my August wedding....but that is because I knew people would be planning vacations, etc and it was just before Labor Day, so I wanted people to be able to plan.

I think we sent our out in October for our July wedding.  I think it is standard to sent them 6-8 months before the wedding.

I did mine about 4-5 months out, I got a little behind because 6 months out for me was Christmas time, way too busy to think about wedding stuff at that point.

We did our save the dates a year in advance.  At least half of our guests are from out of town, so they needed to be able to plan in advance.

There is etiquette for this- whether or not you decide to follow it.

The etiquette is as follows: If you are having a non-destination wedding you should send your STDs six months before.

If you are having a destination wedding they suggest 8 months.

Additionally, if the wedding is on a holiday weekend they suggest 8 months out as well.

My wedding is on October 23 and I put my STDs in the mail on April 24 :)
