New Jersey

Hi I'm new!

I've been engaged since October and not getting married until January 2013.  I can't wait to start planning.  Is it too early?

    Congratulations.

I think most here will tell you it's never too early.

Typically, you want to book your venue first so that you can get a date locked in before meeting with other vendors.  To do that, you need to understand how many guests you're planning on.  That said, I don't know how far in advance venues are willing to contract.

At the very least, think about a budget, think about a guest list, and visit a few bridal shows.  More than anything, you just want to begin getting a sense of what you want to do.

    Congrats and welcome.

You can certainly start the process.  Creating a budget and tenative invite list is always a good starting point, Search for ideas for the type of look you want, etc.  But take your time in choosing things, such as the Bridal Party, we have all seen it so many times.  When a bride gets so excited and then picks her whole BP 2 years out and then 6 months before the wedding things change and she isn't that close with those people anymore.  Things of that nature.

I'm so excited!  Thanks for the great suggestions.  I know what we'll be doing this weekend.

Also if there are any vendors you must have contact them too -- some vendors book up very quickly.

Just don't pick your bridal party or buy a wedding gown/bridesmaids dresses this early.

If there's other stuff you want to do or book, go ahead.

My wedding isnt until July 2012 and most of it is planned.  The benefits of booking early are more choices and you can get 2011 prices which will be cheaper than 2012 or early 2013.  Some places do not have their 2013 books open yet.  My advice is to go to a ton of bridal shows and start to gather ideas.  Many are free and they are fun.
