Is anyone doing cupcakes instead of a wedding cake?

I just had a few questions.  Me and my FI wanted to have cupcakes instead of a wedding cake.  We are getting married at The Manor and they said they would be able to provide the cupcakes in place of the cake (which was free of charge).  My question is, do you think having The Manor make all the cupcakes would be as good of quality as getting the cupcakes at a bakery?  We love the cupcakes from Mr. Cupcakes, or Crumbs, but we aren't sure if we want to spend the extra money on something we can get for free from The Manor.  Any thoughts?

If you like their cake their cupcakes should be the same quality. If you were going to use their cake from the start then I would imagine its ok to use the cupcakes but if you are doing a tasting maybe you can ask to sample a few flavors?

We considered doing cupcakes at one time and the whole reason we wanted to do them was because the cupcakes at some of our favorite places (Crumbs, Stuffed Cupcake, etc.) are so much better than any cakes we've ever had anywhere.

In all honesty, FI and I weren't huge fans of The Manor's cake when we attended a wedding there, but that could've just been due to the flavor combination that the bride and groom had selected.

If you're going the cupcake route I'd get them from your favorite cupcake place and ask The Manor to throw something in for free to make up for the cost of the cake (when we asked them about getting cupcakes from another place instead of having their cake, they told us they couldn't eliminate the cake cost, but they could replace the cake with something added to the cocktail hour or dinner).

Can you do a taste test of the cupcakes?  You may not need to spend any extra- you may be surprised!

I also want cupcakes instead of a cake :)

The place we are looking at includes the cake in the price and I haven't asked if they can do cupcakes.  We are on a budget wedding and if it costs more for the cupcakes, we'll just keep it as the included cake. haha

We just got married on June 11 and did a cupcake cake. If you would like to see pictures of our stand or set up PM me your email so I can send it. But...try their cupcakes and you may be surprised. If not, ask for either the money towards something else or the price per head reduced. Our venue would have given a  2.50$ per plate discount had we not chosen their baker.

We are doing cupcakes instead of cake. Our cake is included in our package and they are going to do cupcakes for the same price. However they did tell us that if we wanted to get cupcakes else where, they would refund us a couple bucks per person.

We wanted to do cupcakes but my banquet manager and parents are pressuring me not to.  I love the idea and I would have def used Mr. Cupcakes- they're amazing.

I dont want to be rude, but just want to voice my opinion. I think that cupcakes dont belong at The Manor. They are more of a birthday party/casual backyard wedding thing. Ive seen cupcakes done at wedding and they always seem to look cheap. Have you considered other more unique options like pies or traditional family recipe cakes?  But if you're going to stick with that idea I would definitely try their cake to make sure you like it. Not sure they could beat Mr Cupcake.

Thanks for your help everyone!  We are pretty set with the cupcake idea, and I don't think it looks cheap at all when done right...I've seen some beautiful cake stands!  I will I will see if I can do a taste test of the cakes, and if they are not up to par I'll see if I can either get some money back or get something added in place of it.  Thanks again!

That's what I was told, as well... Too formal for cupcakes.  :(

The notion that cupcakes are "too casual" for The Manor is ridiculous (as is The Manor being "formal." It's fancy and opulent, but calling it "formal" is a bit of a stretch).

    Do what you want.

Thanks for your honesty about cupcakes being too formal for The Manor.  That actually never even crossed my mind.  I just feel that everyone does a wedding cake, and being that we both LOVE cupcakes I though it'd be cute.  I'll do more research on it.

I am!  But really only because my wedding is more casual and we're doing an assortment of mini cupcakes and seasonal pies...  It's also 1/2 the price of a cake.  So that's the real reason.  I honestly am not a fan of cake or cupcakes (I'm a die-hard chocoholic), but I like the "fun" feel and I love fruity pies!

Cupcakes are definitely more informal, but they're also more fun.  In the end, who cares if the venue is more formal, it's YOUR wedding day!  Choose what you want in the end.  =)

I agree with the fact that the formality (or lack of formality) of a venue ahouldn't determine whether or not you have cupcakes.  If you want cupcakes then go for it!

I personally think that photo booths are better suited to a birthday party or sweet 16 than a wedding, but clearly the casual look and feel of them doesn't dissuade many couples from having them at their receptions.  The same could be said for having bright colored table linens or short bridesmaid dresses.  When all is said and done, the level of formality of a wedding venue really means nothing unless you're going for a SUPER formal or a SUPER laid back wedding... other than that, you can mix-and-match formal aspects with casual aspects and it won't be a big deal at all.
