Marriage License

Hello Ladies!

We're planning on going next week to get our marriage license and were curious to see how long if took to actually get it? Do you receive it the day you go apply for it? Also, I can't find my SS card, but I have my W2's. . correct me if Im wrong, but I can use those right? The website just says (Proof of ID -license- and proof of ss#)

Any do's or dont's ??

TIA! :)

We didn't even have to show our SS cards. We just wrote down our SS numbers on the application. The whole thing took about 15 minutes. It was the easiest part of the whole wedding planning process.

Oh and we went to the Cabarrus County Register of Deeds, so they may be more lax than other counties.

Yeah, we've got to go to Wake county, but hopefully they'll be the same as far as time goes :) Thank you!

We didn't have to show our SS cards either- the lady just said 'Tell me you have them and it's ok' and just had us write the number down. We were done in 15-20 min as well. We went to the Mecklenburg County office so I was expecting a lot worse time wise.

Yeah, we were in and out within 10-15 min. We also went to Cabarrus Cty and didnt have to show proof of SS.

We went to Wake County and were done in about 15 min, including the computer refusing to accept my parents address as a real NC address.  There was no wait when we went (around 2 I think), I heard that if you go between 11 and 1 there can be about an 1 1/2 hour wait because people normally go on their lunch break.  I don't think we had to show our SS cards, we just had them on the form  and she asked us for the numbers.  It was definitely one of the easiest things to do.

Stupid question, and I'm sure I could just google it but I'm asking y'all instead...

Do you get your license in the county where you live or in the county where you're getting married, if they're different?

ETA: I don't know why this post is centered.

In NC, it doesn't matter which county you get your license from. Just make sure that your officiant mails it back to the correct county!

Like PP said, it doesn't matter.  DH and my drivers licenses have Lincoln conty, we live in Wake county to go to state, and we got married in Catawba county.  We got the license from Wake.  They even gave us a pre-addressed envelope for the pastor to mail the stuff back.

Agreed, we got our license in Cabarrus and got married in Mecklenburg.

MAN! I wish I had looked here before I called Wake County to ask the same question.  Just so you know, the official answer is as long as you stay in NC, it doesn't matter what county you use.

I'm late to the game but just so you know...Wake County DOES require proof of SS#.  We had to leave and come back b/c I forgot mine.  But your W2s should be fine (they took a print out from my bank w/ my SS# on it so I didn't have to go all the way back home to get my SS card).  Anyway, just wanted to make sure you took some proof since they did require us to show it.

I just read the new "Triad Weddings" isue and there is an article on marraige licenses in NC -- it does say roof of SSN is required and pay stubs or W-2s are acceptable if they have the SSN on them (but mine only have the last 4 digits, so make sure it hasthe whole number!)

Also for anyeone whodidn't know (which i didn't) once you get the license it is valud for 60 days so you can get it up to 2 months before the wedding.  Your officiant has 10 days after the wedding to return the license to the Register of deeds.  If anyone wants to see the article, i'd be happy to scan it in and email it.
