Registry: Where, When & How

Need advice about when you should do your registry, the most popular stores, and do you bring your mother to help you select if you have no idea about the differences in houseware and  small appliances? If you go too far in advance, what do you do if some items are discontinued?

You can register anywhere pretty much! Some popular places are Bed Bath & Beyond, Macys, Crate & Barrel, Pottery Barn, JC Penney, Kohls, Target...... I would say pick 2. There are plenty of people in each place to help you... they give you room by room check lists. I do not think you need to bring your mom. FI & I were able to do it ourselves with no problems. I would not go more than 6 months before the wedding, for the reason you said.... things get discontinued. You could always go earlier and just do *gifty* type items like frames / toasting flutes / cake knives.... just in case you think people want to get you an engagement gift, but it is not necessary.

I just had my shower... def. register at Bed Bath and Beyond- they take it back and give you cash!!! I liked Macys for my comforter and nicer items... I would not do Crate and Barrel again- that was the one people didnt really use.  Maybe because they arent so convenient and you cant use a coupon? Have fun!  You can register with your travel agent too.  I registered for a few things before my engagement party/Christmas (got some then) but the bulk a few months before my suspected shower. I brought my fiancee twice and my mom twice, both had fun with me doing it!

I agree with Heather. FI and I got engaged in November of 2009 and we did register in early December because family members were already asking us, so we got some things for Christmas, but I would wait about 6 months out.

I just had my shower Sunday and I would highly recommend BB&B. I think 85% of our gifts purchased were from there, and we got almost our entire registry. Crate and Barrel was awesome during the whole registry process, but our guests didn't really shop there- so I think that depends on your guest list and their tastes. We had a few items at Macy's that all got purchased, because we have some loyal Macy's shoppers in our family- but we absolutely hated the registry process at Macy's and really disliked that their prices fluctuate so greatly. We registered in February for our October wedding and thought that worked out well.

We registered at BB&B. The woman was si helpful my FI and I had a great time.  I like that if you return and choose store credit its good for up to 5 years.  So basically since we arent sure what our house will look like we can bring stuff back and rebuy once we know. We also are doing  a HM registry.  We registered in April for a Dec wedding.  Everything has been going well so far. Nothing has been discontinued.  Actaully its nice because we have plenty of time if we change our minds.

We registered at BB&B, Macys and C&B.  We barely got anything from C&B, our Macy's registry was cleaned out and BB&B almost was.  Macy's tends to have higher prices- their "sale" prices are usually the same as BBB.

We are registered at BBB and C&B.  They both give you checklists and have a lot of people who can answer any question you have so you and FI can do it by yourselves.  If your FI is not too into shopping you could always take your mom.  We did our registry like 7 months out.

We did Macys and BB&B, I noticed people (or at least my mother in law's friends)prefer Macys, since people bought stuff from there and nothing from BB&B. I prefer Macys too but BB&B has some stuff that is indeed cheaper! Also, for Macys you need to catch a sale to get good prices, so send the shower invites in advance! And of course, bring your mom, could not have done it without her! and check reviews online, macys/amazon has tons of them! good luck!
