Nevada-Las Vegas

If they ask me "Why Vegas??" one more time...

I'm going to flip the f out.

Has anyone else dealt with negativity from the family about the decision to go to vegas?

I have been asked numerous times - "Why not Houston?" (where FI is from) Because Houston is balls hot and wedding clothes are heavy - we don't need to be sweating all over everyone. "Why not Cape Cod?" (near where we live now) Because we don't have $50k to drop on a New England wedding.

With us being from distant sides of the country people were going to have to travel regardless. We made it fair by going somewhere where everyone would travel and no one has home-court advantage.  I want to just tell people - don't go. If you don't want to go to vegas, then don't. No one is forcing you.

So frustrated.

  • totally understand.  ive had pple said the same thing i tell them you give me 20k and ill have it where you want
  • sorry having so much flack
  • We honestly didn't get that from anyone; friends and family both knew Vegas made perfect sense for both of us.

  • we told them because thats what we want to do and the headache of planning a wedding fro the 150+ people was just killing our budget and we knew we couldnt cut the guest list

  • We got some flack from DH's family.  None of them showed up anyways so don't get what  the big deal was anyways, LOL.  Saved us from having to invite a bunch of family I hadn't met not once during the 6 years we had dated leading up to the wedding, or that DH hadn't met more than once or twice in his entire life and having to drop 30-40K on a wedding here just to accommodate them.

My family is always excited for an excuse to go to Vegas, and some of my friends had wanted to go, but never been able to justify it before/didn't want to go by themselves.
  • We got a little bit, but most people knew that Vegas fit our style and it was more cost effective for us!

I'm sorry you are having to deal with this. Honestly, I would just say, "You aren't required to attend and it's where we chose to get married, so get over it and come or stay at home while we have FUN."

    Happy planning!!!!
  • Yeah we have but mainly because our family doesn't see us as the partying type so they were more surprised. Also not sure what time of year you're getting married but it gets pretty darn hot in Vegas during the summer lol.

Sorry you're having to deal with it though.
  • Being from the uk all the time!! People have even said we are selfish!!!! Arrgghhhh!! Again give us £20,000 and maybe we would have it in England we would still probably choose Vegas though ;-)

  • We're from the uk and SO MANY people have moaned to us about how much it's gonna cost to get there and made us feel bad about making such a decision for OUR wedding! It really upset me at first but i've learnt to just deal with it. As long as you and your Mr are happy that's all that matters, it's your day so you guys do exactly what you want to and don't be worried about what selfish relatives/friends think, it's about you not them! Keep smiling :

  • LOL I used to try and explain but then I got fed up, so now when they say "oh. why vegas?" I say, "why not?" - they feel awkward and don't push it.... =)

We too are from the UK, luckily all friends and family we care about have been dead excited, its just the annoying opinionated people like work colleagues and friends of friends (which wouldnt have been invited even if it were in the Uk) that really rattle my cage! Each to their own right and we LOVE LOVE LOVE Vegas we didnt even give it a second thought! and i also find that people who have never travelled love to share their negative opinion on vegas too..grrrrrrrr

  • We are getting it too. People are gonna have to travel regardless. STFU and take this good trip to Vegas. LOL

  • I got it from a friend of mine, who said "Vegas is for bachelorette parties, not classy enough for weddings". Snot. But the rest have been so excited about it! I'm sure they will come around once they are there,or at least be jealous after photos. :)

lol, but critcizing someone's choice of where to get married is classy.  Glad you didn't take it to heart!

  • This actually made me feel a bit better.  We got the same from some people as well!  Most have been really supposritve and excited but, there are a few who just don't get it...and it is very annoying!
I mean we're inviting you to a wedding in Vegas...doesn't sounds so bad to me lol!
Not only do we LOVE Vegas, we're paying for it and it's what we can afford!  Miami is SO EXPENSSIVE!  And it's where we want to get married...so come or don't come!  Obviously we want you there if we invited you ( bc our guest list is small) but, you're not obligated!
LOL poeple are so hard to please...

  • Most of our f&f are excited but one of my aunts who I am extremely close with told me it is a very selfish idea n that everyone cannot afford to go to Vegas. I said well its our wedding n its what WE want. And anyone who thinks its selfish can shell out the 20k needed to have a huge wedding with all of the unnecessary bs!
  • This is ALL right on the money.

    I'm glad I'm not alone!
  • Only my FMIL asked me this and it's all because I know that she wanted our wedding to be in town so she could take control upon things.

Fortunately, she won't be able to do so in Vegas :D

That's really great that everyone has been so supportive of your decision! I don't get why people think it's ok for them to tell you that you're doing wrong in regards to your wedding, I'd never dream of saying anything to anyone about their wedding. Nevermind, me and the Mr and my immediate family are super excited for Vegas :D
