Tipping photographer..

I didn't want to hi-jack the post about budgeting for tax and tips, but I have a question about tipping your photographer..

I've read somewhere that if the photographer owns the company, a tip is unneccessary.  But if the photographer is working for a company, there should be a tip.

What do you think about this?  Is it BS?  Was your photographer an employee, or an owner?  Did you tip?

Our photographer owned the company and I generally follow that rule. But he was so great that we ended up tipping him.  If the photographer worked for the casino or some big firm I would have tipped regardless.

  • We didn't tip our photographers (one was a friend), but we paid their airfare and hotel so in essence they got a free vacation outside of our wedding.  :)  If they had extended their stay we would have covered that, though.
  • I sent our photog a thank you card with a tip in it a few days after we got back even though it's their company.  They were with us for 'all day' service which ended up being at least 12 hours so I felt they went above and beyond.

  • Thank you :)  We're booked with Joey Allen, and I've been going back and forth on budgeting a tip since it's his own company.  I know if he does an amazing job I will glady tip, I just wasn't sure if what I read was legit or not.

So I'm guessing I should be budgeting a tip for the Cashman photographer at IP as well?  I plan on paying our officiant $100, his fee is $75..but I didn't even think about the ceremony photographer since we booked Joey as well..

My budget is growing like a weed lol Tongue Out

I wouldn't tip a cashman photog unless you see the pics and find they're incredible; which most of the time with cashman won't be the case.  The downside of having a monopoly is keeping staff in every place.

Regarding Joey, don't forget you can always send a tip later if you don't want to budget for it right now.

Lol maybe we'll tip Cashman instead of buying prints, that should save us tons of money!! I really can't imagine tipping their photographer who will only be shooting for a half hour, maybe even less then that! I like the idea of tipping Joey later, I would love to wait til we received our pics but that may take a month or so... I guess it would be a nice surprise for him though!

I booked Joey too! Will be getting married this week! I was planning on tipping him...he has already gone above and beyond with last minute changes and he had to get a special insurance policy to book at the resort we are getting married at and didn't charge extra! He has been amazing already and hasn't taken a picture yet!
