Nevada-Las Vegas

Is it necessary to have a cake tasting before choosing a bakery or can I go on reputation?

I just left Vegas for a mini vacation. I checked out some wedding venues while I was there but really didnt get to check out bakeries because I  figured that since I am more than a year out, it would be too early. My goal for the next year is to save money which for me means not going back to Vegas (I live in NY so the flight can be costly) till the wedding. I dont want to fly back just to taste cakes. Any thoughts on this? I feel like everything else I can do from here in NY but choosing a cake is hard long distance. What may help is that I am not choosy when it comes to cakes.

Thanks

It's up to you. You don't have to do a tasting if you don't want to. Also keep in mind that Gimme Some Sugar does a mail order tasting if you'd like to try that.

We didn't do a tasting and our cake was pretty good.

Since you're not super picky, I think you'd be toally fine relying on reviews. Pretty much any place that greats a lot of great reviews would probably be fine for you. :)

I don't think it's crucial at all. Unless that was a major detail that was important to you. But if you're flexible, it should be fine.

We didn't do a tasting---and we didn't go on reviews either. We used Retro Bakery for cupcakes---most places reviewed are reviewed for their cakes. We figured we couldn't go wrong with 8 different flavors of cakes; worst case scenario, some would be good, some not so much. I didn't try them all, but the ones I did eat were amazing.

But ,then again, I'm a cupcake hoar. I think cupcakes are God's gift to humans for making it through everyday, so I'm a bit biased.

ETA: I certainly wouldn't go back to Vegas just to try cakes---You'll end up needing either go on reviews, or find the places that ship tastings to you!

Thanks a bunch everyone. I guess I will read reviews, while also keeping my flavors simple since I am not too picky. I dont want to order some off the wall flavor I never had before for my wedding just to get there and realize it is awful

I am doing it all blind since I am overseas and have just been using the reviews as a guide! So far it seems to be working!

Vegas is 50 minutes from me by plane.  and I wouldn't plan on flying out for a tasting...but then again, I am taking whatever cake comes from the hotel in the package.

I don't get married often, but when I do, I do it in Las Vegas.
