[QUOTE]In Response to Re: Ceremony and recpetion NOT on Sat? : i love this day! i've never heard of it before but i love love love it. my SO and i are an interracial couple and it never fails to surprise me how much insensitivity and prejudice still exists.

I had not heard of it either...my mom found it and I read all the history and cried. 1967??!! Its not hard to find people who were alive in 1967...I cant BELIEVE it was that late in our history....and I realized without this court case happening, I wouldnt exist!

Also...how perfect is it that their last name was Loving?? I mean...could it be any more perfect?? It was like it was their destiny to bring down those laws.

The quote from the judge they have ... let me see if I can find it....

"Almighty God created the races, white, black, yellow, Malay, and red and placed them on separate continents, and but for the interference with his arrangement there would be no cause for such marriages. The fact that he separated the races shows that he did not intend the races to mix."
- Judge Bazile, Caroline County, VA, 1965.

That just broke my heart...can you imagine being in a court room and hearing that?? In 1965??

It all just blows me away...and I wanted to celebrate this day the best way I could ^_^

    so amazing.

my SO and i were just in atlanta and visited the Martin Luther King Memorial and they have long lists of the laws that used to exist throughout the country...

some were funny - black and white people were not permitted to purchase tickets to the circus within 40 feet of each other....

we were reading the list and laughing at the ridiculousness but then there was this moment where it was no longer funny and it started to feel so so ugly.

the whole memorial centre is quite powerful.

loving day is a great day to get married.  i'm kinda jealous!

I have never been to the memorial. I feel like I would just break down and cry in there. Some of the laws we have had all over the country are so lame. Like in some places it was illegal to buy a toothbrush on a Sunday... (I dont remember where it was from...but I will never forget it! haha)

Its amazing all that we went through as a species...I just cant imagine feeling that kind of hate for someone else.

I remember moving from California to New York...and I thought it was going to be this amazing melting pot and as it is during the day, at night, people went home to their neighborhoods. My mom (who is Irish and Mexican but looks typical Irish) ....had some black friends and they would have to escort her out to the car so people couldnt cause trouble in the neighborhood.

*sigh* ...my ex husband is korean and japanese...people were SHOCKED that a woman who looks black would marry an asian man... *shrug* ... I just dont get why it matters...or has ever mattered.

Did you guys take pictures at the memorial? I can only imagine the power that must have held... but yeah... you can get loving day kits online and throw a party at your home or make it a community thing. I really want to see things be different for my children... but I am scared it wont be.

There are still places I get followed when I am there...(I used to live in Oregon) and I see kids raised in the KKK and other hateful organizations and they talk to these kids and they cant even explain WHY they hate these people...they just do because their parents told them to.

*sigh* ... 1967...I was born in 1982... 15 years later. 15 years is NOTHING...a blip in time...just amazing.

::I'm butting in::  my FI and I were talking about Loving vs. Virginia a few weeks ago. You're right, 1967 was not that long ago!  We're big fans of marriage equality and I'm glad we're not breaking any laws by getting married heh.

As a country some times I think it's amazing how far we've come - yet we continue to take steps backward.

I'm jealous too!  I wanna get married on that day now!  haha.  Will just have to throw a big party instead :)

Ebony and Ivory reminds me of the Fresh Prince episode where the aunt marries a white guy and Carlton sings a bunch of songs like that one and Jungle Fever.  I used to love that show :)

Who didnt love that show! hehe

I totally remember that episode... I will tell you...I thought it was SO WEIRD when they started playing it on Nick at Night... I mean I used to stay up and watch DickVan Dyke and Mary Tyler Moore ... not Fresh Prince!! Ugh...made me feel a bit older than I think I should have at that moment...

*** It wont let me say Di** Van Dyke...as 2 words..so I made it one... this board is so weird with what you can and can not say!
