IMHO, I would not stay at the Riviera because it is old and far away from the center of the strip. I would stay at Imperial Palace, which is also pretty cheap, but right in the middle of the action.
    What is your budget?
Are you a gambler?  Do you want a fancy getaway or is price the most important?

we were hoping to speind $600 or less on flight and hotel

    Are you a gambler?
No a big gambler but we enjoy it from time to time we go maybe 4 times a year to black hawk

we would love a fancy place but not sure we can afford that on our budget.

Monte Carlo and Luxor are fairly reasonable too usually, and at a better location IMO than Riviera.

Imperial Palace is reasonable too. Also you might want to check out The Golden Nugget, on Fremont (old downtown).

Check out http://www.smartervegas.com or http://www.i4vegas.com/ for good hotel deals.

We stayed in a West Wing room at MGM once and it was very nice and felt swanky for about $80 per night.

I'd stay in the tower at Luxor though, I've heard most of the pyramid rooms are stull kind of nasty since they haven't been renovated in forever.  I don't have personal experience with them but I've gambled there randomly and the rest of the pyramid is pretty nasty so I wouldn't be surprised if the rooms were still the same as what's outside the rooms.  The tower supposedly was just recently renovated and in pretty nice shape.

Hi, I also wouldn't stay at the Rivera due to location on the strip. You can also try Harrah's, they are pretty cheap. Or Bills Gamblin Hall and Saloon. I have people staying there when we go  for our wedding. But they both are older hotels nothin fancy about them. They are located center of the strip.  Also I have friends who got a good deal on flight and room and they are staying at Monte Carlo. They either booked through Southwest.com or expedia.com. Hope that helps :)

I second taking a look a smartervegas.com for deals and also sign up for different hotels e-mails (Mandalay Bay, Wynn...). They send out good deals every so often.

Also, how long are you staying, and is it weekend or weekday? You'll have better options if you're staying Sun-Thurs.

I second Aegrish's suggestion of Luxor and Monte Carlo-- both are cheaper but are perfectly fine to stay at, and they're more or less in the center of the strip (Monte Carlo is more central though).  I'm headed to the Monte Carlo this weekend and we got some crazy Travelocity price of $46/night (or something like that).
