Thanksgiving Happenings

Alright. . so we all know strange things happen when families get together (both good and bad). . . what happend to you this Thanksgiving?

My strange thing = FI and I were visiting his family in VA (his aunts house and his family drove down from CT to meet us there). Well all was going pretty good aside from the overly packed house (which was fun regardless) but then his family came up with the idea that his uncle, who is an officiant, should just go ahead and marry us over Thanksgiving because it would be a 'fun' thing to do.  I kind of joked it off. I think FI actually really wanted to go ahead and do it even though it would not have been 'legal'. I would have felt awful because my family wasnt there, plus we would need to let all guests know that we were married.  It was a cute idea, just too much of a headache, and a little strange :)

Now your turn! :)

Nothing huge happened, but my 84 year old grandmother did prove that she definitely has a hearing problem:

Mark and I had been out shopping and had seen a beautiful counter height table that would be perfect in our new house. Best part was, the huge table complete with butterfly leaf and 8 chairs was only $687. We discussed the beauty of the table in front of family, and also made the statement that we would be gifting the table to each other for Christmas. My grandmother comes out later with "I want to buy you that table as your wedding present." Tears started flowing! Wow - really, that's so much. Later, I was thanking her again in private, and straight up asked again, "are you sure that's not too much?" She assures me that she spent that much or more on my brother when he got married 3 years ago, and she'd be happy to do it. She simply needed to know the exact amount complete with tax so that she can write us a check to cover it. I mentioned again that $687 was the original cost, and we could cover the tax...her eyes POPPED out of her head. Bless her sweet heart - she had only heard $87. Embarassed She did end up writing a check to cover a portion of the table, which Mark and I are now the proud owners of, but Whoops! Smile

My Mom was a righteous b**ch to me on Thanksgiving even though I cooked most of the meal.  Nothing too unusual there - but felt the need to share.

So that's so sweet that your grandmother was offering to buy that table! Bless her heart.  We bought a washer and dryer! So excited about that one and can't wait for it to come in!

Ahh Grace, I experienced that too! My mother really loves to cause a scene. Putting her and future-family in the same room with alcohol? Never a good idea but for some reason we do it anyway. A few tid-bits:

FBIL's sketchy girlfriend was supposed to come, I added a menu-item that she could eat since she doesn't eat turkey or dairy (wtf?) About 30 minutes before we were supposed to eat she called FBIL and said her car broke down and he would need to go to Raleigh (from Carrboro) to get her. So, he goes, we prepare to eat later. He gets to her apt, she says she is not feeling well and doesn't want to go. Would he mind staying there with her? She's such a peach...

Also FI accidentally gave FFIL the "world's best grandfather" mug (not sure if I shared this story yet) for after-dinner coffee and that led to a 20-minute family debate, in front of me, without my participation, about when I would pop out a kid. I was horrified. They almost placed bets.

DH's parents made his 93 yr old grandmother call and leave a VM guilt tripping him because he wasn't there at Thanksgiving....I'm so over this family.  It's too much work.

Haha Grace, next get-together I'll break out the stories. :) I keep asking FI why we don't film our family holidays and send the footage to Bravo, we could be celebrities...

Kgaliger, don't you love guilt trips? How are all in-laws so good at them?
