Freed's..dun dun dun

So, I just got off the phone with Jayme at Freed's..anyone else find that super wierd?

I emailed them a few days ago with a photo of the cake we were interested in and I got a phonecall/voicemail a few hours later with Jayme giving me her personal cell phone # to call back....I put it off for a few days because I just found that wierd..how should I know when she's in the office or at home??

Anyways, I just called her back and she figured out who I was by me describing the cake to her and she said she didn't have any of her paperwork with her at the moment because she was at lunch.. YEAH, its your personal cell phone... So she said she will call me back when she is back at the office.

Am I out of line being irritated here? Yes she was super fast both times responding to me, but why not just give me your office phone so I know it is OK to call whenever?

Yeah, I think it's weird that you are irritated. Call between 10 and 12 or 2 and 5 if you feel weird about calling during non-work times. Not sure of the inconvenience to you in this scenario but perhaps I am missing something.

Yes, I think it's weird she gave you her cell phone number.

The only reason I can think of for it to be normal is if she called you back from her cell phone and wanted you to be able to recognize the number on your caller ID.

Eta: using a personal number for business is weird. I hate phones.

Rule #1 with Freed's is be prepared to have a complete lack of useful communication with them.

Rule #2, calm down because somehow it will come out great anyway lol.

It took me two weeks of badgering them just to get a written receipt emailed, faxed, mailed or however they felt like providing it so I could feel comfortable that they actually had our order (ended up being scanned and emailed).  Nothing I did via email ever got answered, had to be by phone and then most of the time the 'person I needed to speak too' wasn't available.  I turned dealing with them over to Scheme Events a few weeks before the wedding and just hoped for the best and the cake turned out awesome.  I'm not sure if Scheme had better luck with them or just didn't tell me they had the same problems.  Several others have reported similar experiences with them; no communication, great cake lol.

LOL VG, "no communication, great cake" fits perfectly. We had some issues as well with communication (you can read the review in my bio) but everything worked out and our cake was perfect.

I met with her too, also gave me her cell after I left.  During the meeting she basically proceeded to try to talk me out of the very specific cake that I wanted, to the point of quoting me a completely different cake.  She ended up calling back on the day I was flying out from the scouting trip and gave me a price for the cake that initially wanted, too little too late.  Plus, I liked the taste, design and everything else of the vendor we are going with, not to mention two or three other vendors were also better.

I worked with Jayme, too.  When I called she gave me both numbers (and her days/office hours)...  I think I called her cellphone once because of the time difference between LV and Japan about a problem with my credit card not going through the first time when we placed the order.

They were good about e-mailing me through the order process, but getting in touch with them after we changed reception venues was a bit of a hassle, and on the day the cake actually got delivered to the wrong place before it showed up at our reception.  (But this was a mixture of theirs and Scheme's fault.)  Though the cake did look exactly like the picture I had given them, and was delicious other than the frosting being a little too sweet.  :)

OK glad to know I'm not alone.. She ended up calling me back 3 hours later and quoted me $712 for a cake to feed 65-70 people.. ouch! May need to rethink the cake design, haha.

I think ours was about $850 for 110 so sounds on par with their typical pricing.

Ours was a fairly simple design, we got one to feed 65 -70 ppl and added a sheet cake as we had 84 guests, we were around $450. It definitely depends on how extravagant you want.

Uh, I don't have a work cell so my personal cell is on all the phone lists at work and yes, clients call me too.  I have had clients call on the weekend.  I think THAT is rude, not my having to use a personal cell to stay connected when not at my desk.

Sounds like I'll be going with another baker.  How unprofessional!

I used to use my cell as my work phone.  I never ran into a problem (thank god)  I did have a friend who was drunk when a client called and she answered.  Talk about a sobering experience!!

Ours was like $196 or so for up to 25 people before the $50 delivery fee.  Definitely depends on the design...  Here's the pic we sent them when we ordered:

with 2 layers instead of three.  We didn't find anything much cheaper than what Freed's quoted us.

We got a $5/person credit towards the cake at Freed's as part of our package, but could have gone with a different bakery and had the $5/person taken off the package price.  I sent the same design to Caked Las Vegas because I had heard that Freed's was so expensive so I thought we could save some money.  Caked quoted us $900, almost $500 more than what Freed's charged us.

Could it be that the cell phone is a company issued one?

I called during normal 9 -5 business hours, it just felt odd to me as I don't know what days she would be off at home (she called me on a Sunday..so I'm guessing that she also works weekend days).

I guess I'd rather leave a voicemail on an office phone and have her get back to me when she is in the office, than me calling her only for her to say she'd have to call me back.

Here's the cake picture I sent, I'm guessing the handpainting is what drove the cost up

IDK what they can do but I think I'll try asking if there is anyway they could do something with a similar feel for around $400...something at all!

It really just seems to depend on the design...  I don't understand why there's such a fluctuation in who's the cheapest.

I forgot to add that Freed's was the preferred vendor for our old reception plance and we waived the cake cutting fee by using them, which was one reason why they were cheaper for us.  The new venue didn't charge anything so we were lucky in that respect.  :)

And at kasonandjeri- I can totally see how that sort of cake might run you about that price!  Looking at the picture and the number of people it's supposed to feed, I don't think it's unreasonable at all.
