Picking the dress

Hi Knotties,

I can't make up my mind on how to pick my dress. My family want me to do the usual go to the bridal shop, try on the dress, and say yes to the dress. However, I don't want a long dress. I want a short/knee length dress with vintage style that most bridal shops don't carry. Some of online stores (from China/Hong Kong) have these dresses with really good price. I'm just worry if I ordered them online, it won't fit correctly. I know I can get measurements but still sometimes they are not accurate.

My budget for the dress is $300 maximum. I don't mind used dress but my family against it. Also I'm in the process of losing weight and so far I lost 12 lbs in 3 months. I don't want to get a dress now and then have to do major alteration later down the road.

So I want to know where do you get your dresses, for how much if you don't mind me asking, and if you ordered them online does it fit you almost perfectly?

Re: Picking the dress

  • I'm getting mine (opted for tea length as well) from simplybridal.com, but have looked at some on jenjenhouse.com and unique-vintage.com. I'm getting measured this weekend. My dress is so reasonably priced that if I need it altered, I can afford to do so.
  • yeah, for your budget you definitely want something that hopefully won't need altering. You can still go and try on dresses - I ended up getting a full length dress that i'm getting shortened, but i'd never have thought to get it if i hadn't tried the full one on. And you can see how different styles of dresses look and feel on you, even if you do decide to order online.

  • I would avoid ordering from a knock off retailer in China, as lots of people have had disasters with knock off dresses (doesn't look like picture, shoddy work, cheap fabric, etc.).

But check out Nordstrom's online.  They have a bunch of short white dresses under $300 and I believe you can return anything that doesn't fit.

By the way, I think a " used" dress is a wonderful idea, particularly with a $300 budget.  Are you paying for your own dress?  If so, buy what you like and don't tell anyone it is used (I prefer to say, "pre-owned,"  which sounds nicer, ha ha!)

You may also want to cross post this on the Attire board, as they are pretty good about identifying places to buy inexpensive dresses (note, however, that they are REALLY against buying a knock off, so you'll definitely get an earful on that!)

    Good luck!

  • Thank you for the suggestions ladies. :)

ccavness how can I get an invitation to those online boutiques?

sd210, yes I'm paying for my own dress. I don't mind the "pre owned" dresses ;) but of course people will tell me I should get a new one. I don't understand why is that a big deal since I'm only going to wear it once. Thanks for the idea on Nordstrom. I don't venture much outside this board because those ladies on other boards can be intense to deal with. Lol. Las Vegas knotties are the best ever!!!

I think Rue La La lets you just sign up without an invite.  If not, PM me your email and I'm happy to send you one from my account.

And, I hear ya about people giving you a hard time about the "pre-owned" thing - - a couple of my friends have looked at me like I have 3 heads when I mentioned that it was something I would consider.  I mean, I'll have the damn thing cleaned first!  I just don't see the big deal, but different strokes for different folks I suppose.

  • I ordered mine from a knock-off China website - dressilyme.com - and I was MORE than satisfied with my dress. Of course it's not 100% like the picture, it's a knock-off. But I paid mine $200. The fabric and sewing aren't any more cheaper than what you find in normal bridal store... Actually, I was surprised by the quality! My father's girlfriend couldn't believe I had only paid $200 for it!

For the price I paid, I had much more than expected.

I heard horror stories from bridal stores too, you know ;)

Basically, it's up to you! :)

  • I definitely think that a pre-owned dress us fine.. and you can get a lot for your money..
I believe that this is YOUR DAY and you should do whatever makes you feel good.. AND if these people that are giving you a hard time want to come out of their pockets and help...that's fine too.. If not.. let you do your own thing..

    Good Luck finding your dress!!!
