Getting a dress

Hi everyone,

So my wedding is 12/12/12 and I still haven't gotten a dress. I keep putting it off because I have been dropping a lot of weight and don't want to have too many alterations. I know I'm going through David's Bridal.  I'm planning on going the end of October and then maintaining my weight.  Is that too late? Has anyone else waited until almost the last minute to get a dress?

Re: Getting a dress

  • if you are going to davids i suggest you go like NOW.....unless you are buying off the rack. I ordered my dress 7/7 and it came in on 8/20, but when i bought it they told me it wouldnt be there until october! they always have sales so youll be able to find something on the rack, it just may not be exactly what you want. have you tried craigslist? u can get one cheap and alter it to fit

  • Yeah try to go ASAP cause your choices get limited the shorter the time frame I'm getting married 12/8 and i got my dress in aug... Didn't get what I wanted based on timing ... Good luck!

  • I got lucky and got a dress that needs no alterations (well a bustle and if I loose weight I won't mind having to deal with that issue ;)).  I bought it 'off the rack' because it fit perfectly the price was the same and everything but I didn't have to wait (although I bought my really early so waiting would've been ok).  I suggest looking asap; from what I understand it's rare to have the size, style and color you want right there in the store and DB could take a few months to get it when ordered.

  • I just got my dress from them and bought one off the rack. They have a TON to buy off the rack. I tried on over 15. If you go in and don't have a specific dress in mind it will probably work out. I also just dropped a quick 15 lbs. My wedding is 2 weeks from today and I am bringing it thurs to get taken in.
  • I would probably go get it now, especially considering DB is probably the fastest at actually getting the dresses and if you go to another privately owned place they sometimes say it can take 6 months to get, usually that's not the case but you never know.
  • I ordered my dress from David's on Sept. 8th and it arrived last week (Sept. 27th).  But each dress is different.

If you don't have your heart set on one specific dress, check out all the one's DB has "off the rack".  I went in Friday night and tried on 6-8, the last one I tried on fit perfectly, and was gorgeous!  I would have never picked it for myself, but once I saw it on I fell in love.  Since it fit so well it didn't need any alterations, they just wanted to keep it to clean and steam it.  I had them add a bustle so they gave me the usual 4 week alteration timeline.  Their words exactly "the process is the process, regardless of how much we do/change".

So I say go for it!  If you plan on buying off the rack leave at least 4-6 weeks for any alterations, leaving yourself an extra week or two for any last minute rush alterations if needed.  Just go in with an open mind, and a budget!  They kept putting me in dresses that doubled my budget!

ETA: Mine was VERY last minute, I'll be picking it up 2 weeks before the wedding!

  • If you are a "sample" size I am sure you will have more options other than Davids Bridal if you are in a crunch.

I ordered my dress and it took 5 months to come in. However, I did not order from David's Bridal.

Not to cause anxiety, but I would go sooner rather than later.

  • I had to order mine from DB and they told me it could take up to 8 weeks to come in.  It came in in 2 weeks.  Then the standard 4 weeks alterations.

I had to have about 6 inches cut off the bottom, the shoulder staps shortened by about 2 inches, and a bustle.  (yeah, I'm not the tallest girl out there)
