Groom's cake recos

Anyone here want to recommend their groom's cake baker? I need an armadillo cake with red velvet cake and gray icing. We can't do it for the wedding (I'll be damned if I Am going to pay a $5.50/person cake cutting fee.) but I want to surprise fi at the rehearsal dinner.

Anyone use someone who does these kind of cakes....at a reasonable cost?

Stinker had an amazing wedding cake (mario bros theme) that was done by Gimme some sugar. Not sure fo the costs though but they might be good with doing the armadillo.

My baker, Creations, is doing it for about $50. But I am not sure how much that is supposed to feed, but I don't think mine is going to be anything fancy, I gave her a picture and I think she is just going to put it on a sheet cake and cut around it.. wow I am no help at all!!

It is a southern tradition, wherein the groom's cake was typically a rich dark cake like a red velvet or chocolate.   Single girls were supposed to take a slice home and put it under their pillow so they would dream about their future husband.

Yep! Give the girls at Gimme Some Sugar a call! They are great to work with and I am sure they would have fun with your idea :)

I emailed 3 or 4 bakers and one got back to me, don't remember if it is Gimme or not, but the one that emailed back wanted $200 for a cake that feeds 20.  I am having a tough time justifying that.  We are already paying a ridiculous amount for the wedding cake.

Yeah that does seem steep! If you contacted creations I am willing to bet a thousand dollars she is not the one who got back to you, she pretty much refuses to use email, which really ticks me off but whatever. But if you have a minute to call her, I thought the prices were pretty reasonable, I think our whole cake is only like 350 to feed 75..

Well to be honest Gimme Some Sugar can be pricey depending on the detail of the cake (Which should be expected if you want good detail work. IMO.) . My cake had a lot of detail work so I spent close to $500 for 50pp.

I don't think armadillos have a lot of detail, but what do I know.  That's okay though.  My phenomenal agent who found me a piano man is now searching for an affordable armadillo for us.
