how soon?

How close to the wedding date did you all start planning your Las Vegas wedding? We are thinking of getting married at either Bellagio or Wynn in September/October 2012. My impression is that it's easier to book a place in Las Vegas then a reception hall here.
Is this too early to start planning? We are trying to pick a date where it would be pretty cheap and work for our guests. Places like orbitz won't even let me check air/hotel prices that far in advance.

Depends on what you mean by easier - the popular places can definitely fill up quickly, especially if you're having a Saturday wedding.  Also, the weather is generally better late September/October so that may be a popular time as well.

If you know what you're looking for and don't think you'll change your mind, I'm always a fan of the sooner the better.  This also means you could lock in lower prices (in case the venue or vendor decides to raise prices at the beginning of the year or something).  We booked our May 2011 wedding at the end of April 2010 - again, we knew what we wanted and that we weren't going to change our minds.

ETA - forgot to say welcome to the board!

We started planning/booking early (1.5 years out) because we have international guests.

If you want to get married at a hotel or have your reception at a more popular location, I think starting now is perfect.  Worry about the details when you're about a year out, but start getting quotes for packages soon.

April/May and Sept/Oct are popular wedding months in October, per Direy, so you might want to start asking around soon.

    Congrats and welcome!

I don't think it's too early to start planning. We booked as soon as we set the date, 11 months out. Contact the hotels you're interested in, to see what dates are available. I don't know about the Bellagio but at the Wynn's wedding salons prices stay the same regardless of what day of the week you decide to get married on.
    Happy planning :)

We started planning about 15 months in advance and started booking vendors about 12 months in advance; some were already booked at that point...

We started planning in April 2010 for our June 2011 wedding.  It depends on vendors, what time of day you want, etc.  Some vendors book up more quickly than others.  You could start now and be good to go by next year this time.

I would start now if your comfortable. Especially if its a knottie preferred vender. They book up super quick. At 13 months out the photographer i wanted was booked on my preferred date, in our case date wasn't that important so we just moved it to a date he was free.

I booked everything  in Feb 2011 for July 2012 because I was going on a tour of duty in Afghanistan and wasn't sure when I would be home. Just make sure the places you choose are what you want because all of our deposits are non refundable (Although they said I could change to different days if need be and if they were available). Happy planning.

Word of advice. A Vegas wedding can be very simple. I knew we would be doing Ceremony & Reception at the Wynn. Keep in mind everything is a package deal and any little extra will cost $$$. So i would say KIT (keep it simple) and don't turn your easy breezy wedding into something BIG... :)

    My timeline...
We got engaged August 2010, Set Nov 2011 date around Feb of this year.
We started to really  plan in March when our STDs went out.
In June we scouted our location. In August our Invites got sent out. Rsvp is mid Sept.
Hopefully by Oct we have a reception & everything maped out ;)

I agree...keep it simple. I am going to book my Nov 28 2011 wedding next week at CP or The Cosmpolitan...both have many slots for that weekend. However, I wouldnt suggest booking this late, as you may want certain preferred vendors. We are only having 15-20 guests so its not much to plan. Reception will be just dinner at one of the casino restaurants. This is sooo much less stressful than they original wedding i was planning!

BTW, be careful about the photographers that they offer in their packages. Look at online reviews and ask for a specific photographer.

    Good luck!
