How Long Do Hair Extensions Last?

Have any of you gotten hair extensions?  How long do they last?

I'll be in Vegas the week before the wedding with my MOH and I'm thinking of going with her to get some extensions.  I don't really want super long hair, just thicker hair in order to do the hair style I want.  I have very thin hair!  But I'm worried because I'd have to get them on Thursday or Friday and the wedding isn't until Tuesday.  I have no clue how long these things can last and I don't want them falling out in the middle of the ceremony!

I believe in a lot of things. I believe in fresh tennis balls, the healing power of bunnies, and that the novels of Susan Sontag are something I'll never read. In fact, I don't even know who Susan Sontag is. What is she... like... a painter? I believe in Crystal Lite because I believe in ME. I believe in the movies of Val Kilmer, though these days it ain't so easy. I believe in Darren Sproles, the word "dabble", the first season of "Silk Stockings", and big, warm, moist, gooey chocolate chip cookies that melt in your mouth and all over your face.

Re: How Long Do Hair Extensions Last?

  • Some of them can last months, but it depends upon the type that you get.  If you have a salon in mind that you are going to do it at, I suggest calling and asking about the type of extensions, how long the last and the price.  I believe the ones that last months are well into the 100s of dollars, so be prepared for that.  I have heard that some people go to Sally's beauty supply or ULTA and get clip in ones that are much less costly and are easy to put in and take out.  For the specifics though I would recommend posting on the hair board because some of those ladies have done both.

  • Crazy isn't it. :)

I'm also thinking about the same thing, so if I find out anything from my salon, I willl let you know.

  • Ok so when I got my hair cut a couple of weeks ago I asked the stylist and she suggested clip in extensions for me and said she would email me a link to these  great one she recommends. Well I never heard from her. So i just did a board search about clip in extensions and the thing that came up the most was Euronet extentions from Sallys. They are $80 a box. and supposedly its plenty to do your whole head. they said you can put them in by yourself or have them professionaly put in. And I guess as long as you wash them and brush them they last forever.
  • For what you're wanting, I would say to use clip-ins. Hair extensions last different lengths of time depending on the type (fushion, sewn, etc). If you're really just wanting them for one day, you can buy the clip-ins from Sally's and let the stylist put them in for you.

Plus, if you get a stylist that isn't great at them, they could fall out within a few days. You also have to shampoo your hair differently. Usually with thin hair, it tends to get oily/greasy quicker than other hair. (I have thin hair, so I'm right there with you.) You can't shampoo extensions as much as you need to shampoo your actual hair. So, to sum it up, I vote for clip-ins. (:

  • I have clip ins and  I LOVE them. What I did, was I got mine and took them to my hair stylist. Then I had her put them in and cut the extensions to match my hair cut. Looks more natural and you get the tutorial on how to get em in.

Also, You can wash them, but let them air dry, then style 'em. :)
  • I bought clip ins years ago (I have thin/fine hair). I ordered them online - 12" length just to add volume. I had asked salons about true extensions and have gotten quotes up to $1200 - and they only last 6 months - 8 if you are very careful.

My FI bought me 18" clip in extensions back in Sept. I. LOVE. THEM. For the first time in my life I have long hair. They blend with my perfectly. These are the kind for Sally's - $100 for the box. At first they were too straight for my hair - picture jet straight Asian hair. However my hair dresser put some serious curls in and after they fell out in a day the extensions have a slight natural looking wave to them.

You can wash, condition, blow dry, curl, straighten them, etc. Just take care of them, comb them gently with a wide tooth comb at night and never sleep in them
